At our house we have 5 cats...they go in and out of the house. Yes, it's a houseful, but they seem to get along. Anyway, the 3rd cat we got in this crazy managerie has started something new...and VERY disturbing!!! He peed on our bed...while we were in it!!!!!

This cat is a full adult, and neutered. He is about 3 years old. We've have him since he was a kitten. We added the last 2 cats about a year and a half ago.

I just don't know what to do. This is the 2nd time he has done this. The first time was right after we tried to have the dog at out house. I figured it was that. He jumped onto the bed, and peed right beside Kris! I grabbed him, shoved his nose in the pee, and threw him outside. This morning he climbed on both of us, and peed right between/on us!!! I jumped out of bed, grabbed him, shoved his nose in the pee, and threw him outside(it was raining heavily!)

Generally the cats sleep with us...especially our oldest cat, who thinks of me as his bed warmer. That's Patch...and he wasn't on the bed at the time this happened.

I'm so mad, but I have an aversion to taking him to the pound. If we have no alternative but to get rid of him, then so be it...I can't have a cat peeing on me!

Anyone have any advice about this???

well my first thought is how clean are your cat boxes and how many do you have inside. While they normally go in and out with this ran and mud no cat is happy outside my barn cats are going from the garage to the hay barn and back again once in a blue moon one will wander out to the barn with me.

With t hat many cats i would think you need a minimum of 3 cat boxes more like 4 and of course you know clean them 2 times a day UGH but i think that might help.

Sounds like he is wanting you to know he isnt pleased with something. We have a cat who is a clean fanatic and she will go pee on the bathroom floor if the cat boxes arent to her liking.

The last thing i would do is bring an adult animal of any kind to the pound since you are giving them a death sentance and one in a unfamilur and scary place at that.

Cats will also do that if they have a urinary infection. I would take him to the vet first before you consider the pound. It very well could be a health issue.

Well it's either of two things. As mentioned a urinary tract infection which can be found out easily by a vet and treated. The second one is a behavourial thing and not so easy to get rid of. You mention that your other cats sleep with you as well. Perhaps this one has now decided he wants you all to himself/herself and the way to do that is to "mark" the area.

Yeah, maybe we should go add a cat box or two...I'll work on that today...He's awfully dang healthy...He's had urinary tract infections before, and so I've seen his behavior with those...I don't think it's that. Usually he prefers going outside...but I have seen him use a box..so maybe that's it??

Danielle, should I be flattered??? If we're his territory that he's marking?? EWWWW!!!

We had a queen bengal cat at my dad's and she didn't like females. She would urinate on only the girls' clothes and beds. We ended up sending her to a new home. She was a breeding cat before we got her and spayed her which may have played a part. She was such a gorgeous girl.

Oh man--you should really get your kitty to the vet ASAP! Cats will do things like that sometimes to show you that it hurts--on your bed gets your attention doesn't it? When my cat started that I thought it was just him showing me that he was mad about something...but it turned out he was going into kidney failure. He passed away about 5 months later despite everything we tried. I really wish I had taken him to the vet right away!

I am definately leaning towards him marking his territory because he is smelling the other cats on your bed and he doesn't like it. I think he's feeling out numberd and it's like a territorial thing.

How about washing all your bedding in Gain which is scented and they won't like it too much, and then closeing the blasted door and not let any of the cats sleep with you?

The other thing is that little box like Lisa said.

Keep it real clean and he most likely does not like to share it with the others. He wants his own most likely.

Oh good luck.

We can all state our opinions until we are blue in the face, but in the end is it worth risking it by NOT taking your kitty to the vet? At best you will know you have a healthy cat with a behavior problem and at worst you will have a sick cat that you can work on getting better.

Just went thru something like this with one of our inside cats. We only have 2 in the house, but we only had one box for them, never seemed to be a problem though, UNTIL recently.. we'll for some reason our younger cat now 1 yr old seemed to want to pee in front of the litter box on our new carpet we'll this owner was about to kill the cat and take her to the pound, but I just couldn't imagine that.. then the vet said you could let her outside if she doesn't stop, okay this is a cat that has always been inside and has no claws, that was out of the question...we'll we closed off the room that she was peeing in so we could re-train her and use a new box in another room with wood floors, so far so good, that has been a month ago, I just pray it stays that way.. we do love this cat she is a great cat and gets along with the other cat, infact they love each other so much, and she actually loves our dogs.. the vet suggested the litter box said sometimes they just don't want to share and clean clean clean the box, ours hate anything in it... we have to clean it every night and every morning to keep them happy. Give it a chance like I did, it may work, keep him out of your room if at all possible so he can't continue to smell were he marked.

It could be many reasons as mentioned.

SOme cats don't do well in multiple cat homes and will start to mark their territory to claim their space if they feel it is threatened.

You mentioned a dog visiting, this may have set the cat off as he may have felt his space was threatened, unfortunately, this behaviour can be very difficult to stop once it gets started.

We had a beautiful bengal cat, coincidence I'm sure, who started spraying when I took in a foster kitty. But she never stopped after the kitten found a home. I placed her in a new home where she was the only cat and she is very spoiled and very happy. She has never marked her territory there.

If you did decide to part with your kitty perhaps you could find him a good home rather than go to the shelter.

Our shelters here have an excellent adoption rate but many don't, it might be a sad end for your kitty at the pound.

But I don't blame you being upset cat pee is GROSS and on your bed AGH!!!!!!!

ALL these reasons can be possibilities. I have heard you should have one more litter box than cats. so if you have 5 cats you need 6 litter boxes. yeah, i know! just what i read and have heard tho from specialists.....

Wash your bedding, all of it, in a good, unscented, non-bio powder and use a hypoallergenic softener. If you use a duvet wash that as well in the same stuff.

I think the reason he started is that he was miffed about the other cat. I agree with getting him checked out, of course, but I really think he is now re-marking his territory and you need to remove all traces of the smell. Biological powder smells like pee to cats and dogs- we cannot smell it , but they can.

We are a multi cat house with multiple litter boxes. We have one little darling that stopped using the litter box and I read on a cat website to get "Dr. Elseys' Cat Attract" kitty litter. It is 100% litter box use guaranteed or your money back. We tried it and problem solved. Now we use cheaper litter and top dress it with the Dr. Elseys' and still so far so good. It was about $20.00 for a 20lb bag.

If you continue shoving his nose in the pee he will do it more....cats are very spiteful.

With 5 cats do you have at least 3 boxes? My other huge concern is older male neutered cat=urinary stones which means often they can't pee when they need to and then pee spontaneously it is very painful and can be treated by the vet. Multi cat household prove difficult as cats tend to be solitary territorial and opinionated......my sisters persian has taken a dislike to her SO's teenaged son....he will go take a dump on this kids pillow and has even taken a dump on him while he was sleeping

My netured male use to pee whenever he has problems with a crystal build up in his urine. Soemtimes is can cause blockage which can kill a cat. My vet once told me to monitor him for inappropiate elimination as that could be a sign that it is a problem. Since I have switched his food though he doesnt have any more problems and is a good boy. Just an idea for you to think about

We have three cats and one of them has decided that she don't like her litter box. She has gone on my clothes. I have changed litters and now she is back to using her litter box.
