I need some help/advice on litter box training kittens. We have 2 kittens that are about 5 months old that we hand raised as they were abandoned by their mother. They have been coming into the house to eat and as they have grown they are spending more and more time in the house with the kids. They weren't intended to be house cats, but the kids love them so much that I am afraid they are soon going to be house cats! LOL! The problem is that they have been "doing their business" in the house (partially our fault as the kids don't let them outside often enough!)...and it can be quite a mess!

I have never had a house cat and have no idea how to go about litter box training these cats...cats are a new thing for us (at least in the house!). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Kittens are usually easy to litter train.

Put the box and food where they are not out in the open.

Once they have pooped outside the box, but that in the box and show

them where it is. Will not take too long for them to learn.

Good Luck.

Ditto to that. There really is no "training" involved. We've had lots of kittens around here

and have only had an issue with one or two (and they grew out of soiling on the carpet as they got older). We just show them where the box(es) is/are as soon as they start exploring and eating solid food (around 4 weeks old). That's about it

But if they do start going on the floor, like "Reble" said, just put a poop in the box and put them in it. They'll figure it out; they, naturally, want to dig and hide it so it's much more agreeable to them to do it in litter as opposed to the floor. If they still aren't getting it, even sprinkle some cat nip in the litter box.

Another thing to try if they don't take to it right away (which they probably will) is to experiment with litter types. I know some indoor/outdoor cats prefer a pine based litter(like feline fresh)or sandier litter(like many clumping brands) as opposed to the larger granules in a scoopable litter- probably because they go in mulched flower beds and sandboxes when they're outdoors as opposed to the middle of a gravel driveway...

Ditto to the above........(and Matt should definitely know!

When we had kittens we did much the same things....One thing I always did though was, take their front paws and show them about digging into the litter. It probably wasn't necessary, but they always would continue working at it after I them go.

Ditto the above but you do have to keep those boxes fairly clean or they will refuse to use it.

Cats naturally like to dig and bury their 'business', so it doesnt take long for them to head for the cat box. If they have no where else to go, this is why they are going where ever. Yep, just show them the box and I bet in NO time they will be using it with no problem.

You may have to adjust cat litters. Some like the heavier 'johnny cat' kind and some like the finer clumping kind, etc.... Just make sure the kitty box is cleaned daily and occasionally rinsed out and bleached as well to avoid the germs that can cause other problems from growing there.

Good luck with your little furry babies
