I put Striker up for sale a couple days ago, along with Rocky ...and i had someone coming to look at Striker but they called today while i was at school and said they would only be willing to pay $300 and that was after i kept him untill summer and finished him off on driving ...so there not interested. And i took Rocky off the net for sale because i just dont have it in my heart to split him and coco up.

But to the point, i got an email just now asking if i would trade Striker (4yrs old, unregistered stallion) to a going on going on 2yr old (in may) filly. She is a Blue Roan Pinto with blue eyes and registered with ASPC. She could be registered with AMHR if she stays under 38' but they said she will reach about 41'in.

I got striker in hope of breeding to our mare ...but our mare is already in foal. I had plans to sell him eventually though after getting him riding better. He is broke really REALLY nice to ride.

Do you guys think i should trade, i mean they only live about 1/2hr away. I asked for pictures and am waiting for them to email me back (cant post them on here though). I never took trading into considereation. I was asking $600 for him if i remember correctly and plan to make sure that he doesnt end up at an auction and am making that clear with this lady.

Im thinking about asking $100 and the filly ...to trade with him.

Would you trade or would you ask $100/$150 to trade. I go to school with there two sons so i know they take good care of there horses.

I just dont know what to do.

Depends on the filly. Personally, I would probably take the trade. If the filly is nice (and you have shetland shows in your area despite her POSSIBLY staying under), you'll be getting a registered horse for an unregistered horse. And in my mind, that's a pretty good deal. But...if the filly is of poor quality, you may be better off holding out for the cash.

Wait... I don't think this is fair at all.

I'm sorry, but just a few weeks ago you had all these plans like hardshipping Coco and Striker, showing them.

WHAT HAPPENED?!

Leeana, that is something you will have to decide on your own. I don't know what you want to do with your minis. One day you want to drive Coco and Striker as a team and breed your lovely mare to him. Then you are talking about selling him, breaking him to ride?? Teaching him to drive, I'm not trying to be mean in any way here, but you change your mind so often it's hard to guess what your overall goals are. It seems to me that you like new things and once the "new" is gone you are looking for something else?? I hope that didn't come off wrong, but you are the only one who can make this decision.

Edited to add:

After all the posts that have been going around I don't want you to think that I'm saying you are wrong for selling or trading horses. I'm only stating that I don't feel I can help you with your decision because I don't know what you are looking at for a goal. I hope that made sense

I have to be realistic about drivint them together though, they have a 3inch height difference and i just dont think it would happen after that post. I dont want to be holding one back and i am just going to let that idea go for now.

I was going to hardship them before i found out it cost nearly $600 and realistically ...$600 is alot of money for local showing.

I just had to realistic and sit down and think everything through. He's been broke to ride since we had him ..i just finished him off and got him kid safe and allot of hours on him.

He also isnt stud quality. He would be okay for halter, which i really did want to show some open halter with him.

I just have my priorities in a different place, and better the way i see it.

Coco isnt leaving Ever! There is nothing wrong with selling a horse. People do it all the time and i just dont have any use for him since Tanner will not longer be around to ride him and he is broke now, should sell him to a nice family with a kid who can ride him. If i used him for stud, which i was planning to but to keep the foal (but i plan to retire angel after this foal she will having this summer). I never did like the idea of selling horse's ....but people do it all the time.

It looks to me, i am getting a good trade but i am just looking for opinions (good or not).

Ok First of all, If Striker isnt registered he should be gelded before he goes... 300 dollars for an unregistered horse....take it and run! If the aspc filly is registered and good quality why on earth would someone want to trade her for an unregistered sale rescue stud???? Just my personal opinion..... How did you get your mini kid safe for riding when you are not really a tiny kid to ride him??? Leanna, are we having flights of ideas again and wishful thinking? Im with the other kids and Im being the mean Aunt again.... I dont think you know what you really want you just want to make changes because it is something new to do.... I understand.... I have to get my ideas and priorities set by my "Horsey parents" every once in a while..... We just dont know how to help you with all your dilemas anymore.

lol i didnt ride him, my 5yr nephew did who is now moving down south with my brother and his wife after they get married. I didnt ride him, that would be a horriable sight.

Im guessing they just want him for there kids to ride, im sure they dont show because i never heard there sons in school talk about it. Being registered doesnt make a horse everything and more
biggrin.gif
..i dont know these people but i dought they care much about registries.

He is a nice quality stallion to breed to unregistered mares. I did ask if they would be getting him gelded ..but they have not emailed me back yet.
yes.gif
. I also am starting to prefer registered horses to non registered horses.

I am not in a dilema ...im just asking for advice which lucky i have this board for and thank god for you all. I can easily make up my own mind ...but i would like to hear other view before hand.

Lyn ..please dont worry about being a 'mean aunt', i like hearing your opinion.

Ok here is my 2 cents worth

It seems like you just don't know what to do with your horses yet. You keep changing you mind on certain things. Not trying to knock you down because I am guilty with that. Heck just recently I had to question if what I'm doing with my life is worth it (horsey life that is). I would never get out of minis but like cutting my herd way down, but decided I'm going to sell a couple (mostly foals) and that will help bring it down a bit. So all I say is before you make a costly decision think about it!

Now to your question $600 is quite a bit for an unregistered stallion, not stallion quality, and none of his foals could be registered. Now IMO $300 isn't bad at all for an unregistered stallion but I think $450 to $500 would be a good price for an unregistered gelding because he is gelded and the new owners wouldn't have to worry about it. Now if they want to trade for an ASPC mare, unless their is nothing wrong with her, that would be a fantastic trade, jmo.

The reason i had the price a bit up there was so it could come down. I would take 500 for him, i added $100 so there was room to come down. But i've worked with him from day1 and thats been a long time. I try to make room so we can come down on the price a bit.

Now they wanted me to work with him for 4 more month and then pay $300 for him ...not happening. My time and effort is worth more then $300.

I've had mini's for about 10 month ...no im not 100% what i want to do yet. I can admit that, but you never know untill you try

I agree.

Leeana, PLEASE geld this horse. He is unregistered. He should NOT be a stallion. Its GREAT that you don't mind that he is unregistered, but the majority of people out there do care. 450 or so sounds good for an unregistered GELDING.

Agreed with them both.

I dont know if they want it for a kid. I know i've seen there sons at our choir concerts with a little girl about 6yrs old. I dont know if they want it for her. I was just asuming.

If these people want him as a stallion ..then they will get him as a stallion. Getting a horse gelded around here cost us $155 when we got Coco gelded, i would expect the person to pay for it and i would add that to the price. They still have not emailed me back, i did ask them if they were planning on getting him gelded. Now if they want me to get him gelded for them then i would be willing to but i would want the $100 along with the filly as well. Gelding is not cheap around here due to lack of vets in my area.

He is very safe, but yes he is a stallion. He has never shown any stallion tendancys toward me ..even with dads mare around and my mare in foal around. My nephew was around him all summer and still is and im guessing will be untill they move. But if they for some reason want him as a stallion, that is how there getting him.

But yes, i would prefer that he was gelded before hand because as you said ..as stallion is a stallion. I am just not going to do anything untill i hear back from them or talk to there two sons tommarow at school.

If im not interested in there filly when i gets pics ...i will probaly just keep him untill this summer and geld him and find a kid to ride him for me and work on some other little things with him.

hi leeana

you know what i think you should go ahead and come here before spring. we can sit down and talk about your horses and figure out what your goals are etc.

On one hand here you say hes not breeding quality. Then you say hes good enough to breed to unregistered mares. This is an oxymoron. Hes either breeding quality or hes not. Just having registration papers (or not having them) does not make a horse breeding quality. I have gelded every colt born on my farm. All them were very nice. Nicer then some breeding stallions i have seen. But in my eyes they were not OUTSTANDING enough to be a stallion. Here is the pic of the colt i gelded and sold this year.

dandy4-280x226.jpg

He would have made a good little stallion but now hes an AWESOME gelding!

Call me after the holidays and well talk. And like i promised if you want a registered horse to show you are welcome to come to a show with us and show one of mine

Kay

He would be 'okay' to breed ...but for what im really starting to get into i would choose not to breed him. For someone just wanting a pet out of his foals ..he would be fine. I was wanting something to do some 'open showing' with ....but i dont see the point of having a stallion around for about a year untill after she foals and its weaned. That would be at least a little over a year without breeding him. That would drive most stallions nuts im sure. I'm sure he could be a good stud for what someone else is looking for ....but not exactly what im looking for in a stallion. Part of me buying him was to keep him out of Baker's hands at Sugarcreek and i had plans for reselling him eventually after breeding him, i just didnt know i was going to end up with a mare 2month in foal. lol.

I would much rather get money then trade ..but if its a nice quality filly then i might consider it since from the PM'd i've gotten since starting this thread were incouraging me towards it.

But if this filly isnt something i like, i will probaly end up gelding him ..i just never did think about it untill just now.

If Angel has a colt this summer ...its going to be a gelding as soon as it's able to ..i decided that a long time ago. lol

Kay, i will call you sometime next week ..im on break starting this friday-jan 3'rd. I'll let you know before i call you.

Thanks ya'll
