Nefertiti is one year old... that was a fast year.

She is now clipped and despite the wormer she gets (monthly alternating pastes per our vet's recommendation) and all the food ( a pellet designed for young growing horses and another high-fat, high fiber pellet) and the hay (4 flakes a day), she looks like a racing fit TB - muscles and ribs showing - and I hate seeing ribs!

Veterinarian has seen her and said she is going through a growth spurt - I have her on Blue Seal Demand and Omegatin (high fat), alfalfa cubes (soaked), timothy mix hay...no grass in our dry lots. She was wormed monthly and will be going on a daily wormer - veterinarian will be back for WNV boosters on the 8th.

For those with young active Moderns, how much food are they getting? I don't want to founder her but I'd love to hide those ribs! Her shoulders and rump are muscled - veterinarian said if those areas were not rounded she would be concerned.

First, kudos for talking to your vet first :aktion033: I hope any advise you get here you'll pass by him/her first.

I have one Modern Pleasure mare that I had a hard time keeping weight on when she was going through a growth spurt as a yearling (now she is a brood mare and a bit tubby! LOL). I fed her grain according to the manufacturer's instructions and all the grass hay she wanted. She was still a bit thin and someone recommended soaked beet pulp and bran oil (never corn oil!). That seemed to really help pick her up. Had a classic yearling last year I had to do the same with and my stallion gets very thin during breeding season and gets the same. Just expect it to take some time for them to learn to like it if it's new to them. Start by mixing 1/4 cup with her grain to make a nice mash.

KayKay ha mentioned a body builder of some kind of me that might also help. Kay... are you listening?

You know, we would still like to see pics of the birthday girl even if she is a bit slim at the moment.

I have had a hard time with some ponies especially their yearling year! This is when they grow so fast they look like they are all legs LOL. I was told by a trainer to buy body builder and it was the best advice i have gotten. It really puts the muscle and bloom on them in a short amount of time. It is expensive (75.00 per bottle) but you only use a small amount everyday. And unlike other weight gain products THEY LOVE IT. It smells like cake batter. I have only had to use it 2 weeks on a yearling and 4 weeks on a mature horse that came to me very underweight. so one bottle lasts a long time. You can order at jeffers equine site just put in the search thing "body builder"

Would love to see pics!

Pics are posted under the Nefertiti pics thread...

Thanks! I will keep everyone updated on what our veterinarian says. Our yearling Morgan Enterprise went through a skinny phase and on the Omegatin she has a coat so shiny it is almost like liquid and her ribs are not as visible.

Now, Mercy and Freedom could lose a few pounds - Indy and Weatherly (even for a yearling) are just perfect!
