Hey everyone! I am semi-new to the miniature horse world. I've worked with thoroughbreds for years now but just got my first mini's this fall. I was introduced to minis by the owner of a boarding kennel I work at. He is confined to a wheelchair and decided to get a couple of minis to drive. He LOVED it and I thought it looked like tons of fun. 3 years later I convinced my DH that I (or rather, our new son) needed a mini. We purchased a bay filly who was foaled the same day our son came home from the NICU. We named her Clementine and she is an amazing little girl. She spent the fall learning how to lead and trailer.
Our second mini came from the same woman we bought Clementine from. Her neighbors were complaining that she had too many animals (she lived in a rural area that got developed and the new move-ins want to run her and her horses out of town!). She turned to us asking if we would give her stud a good home. The deal is that she gave him to us free and clear and we will transport him to her in the spring to breed. He is a beautiful black and white pinto with Falabella blood lines. He is the most gentle, amazing, steady horse I have ever met. If he were a full size horse I wouldn't hesitate to ride him anywhere.
Sorry this is so long but I thought I'd give a little background then let you all know what I hope to accomplish with these two since I'll need lots of help along the way.
I hope to teach them both to drive and I'm not sure where to start. I think Major will be pretty excepting because he had never had a saddle on or a bit in his mouth and last weekend we did both and he didn't so much as look at us sideways. He trusts that we won't hurt him and seems willing to try anything. Clementine is only 7 months old so we are just working on ground manners with her. Does anyone have a good book to suggest for a beginning driver? One that names all the cart and harness parts and what they are for and how to use them all...
One last question is has anyone read or heard about the book Mini School: Teaching your mini to be all he can be?Thanks in advance.
