IM not normally one who likes shock collers and bark collers. But would a bark coller work for whining or not?

My cocker has taken up whining alot. Its not because she has to go to the bathroom either. I get home from work at 11:30pm and I let them play at least a hour. THen they go back in for the night. They both go back out to potty before bed. Well Mitzy is whinning anytime between 4-6 am. And she does NOT stop.

It hasnt been just this shift. Its been all of my shifts. She gets play time before I go to bed on every shift as well as when I get up.

I dont know if this is because she is in heat or not. I do know however that I need some sleep. This few hours every night, and being woke up thru the night im just exhausted.

Baby Jack doesnt do this. When he is put to bed, he sleeps until I get up, or until he crys to go potty.

Sounds like Mitzy is an emotionally needy dog. Cockers dont do that well crated most of the day.... they seem to need lots of human interaction durring the day. I think because you are her only person, when you are at work and sleeping occupy more hours than her awake intervention time with you..... Also shift work is hard on dogs in single parent homes because their routines change...... Hopefully the older she gets the more addaptable she will become. Cockers need lots of attention or field work to do to keep them happy.

I really was expecting from your title for it to be baby Jack because Jacks are notorious barkers! lol

Oh Jack barks all right. But when he is put to bed he knows its bed time.

Mitzy has just gotten like this in the past month. She is 10 months old now. She used to sleep with me, but dont anymore as she crys for Jack if she isnt by him. And well I dont trust him in my bed just yet. When I do feel he is ready they both will be sleeping with me, so I am hopeing that will help some.

My guess is she is just spending to much alone time and wants your attention.

I know our pup who is about 6-7 months old will do the same thing he just sits on the couch or floor and whines till we pick him up or play with him.

Dogs especially young ones really need lots of interaction time.

I know this week I havent been with her as much as im on a new shift. Havent worked it forever. Luckly next spring we may go to fixed shifts or at least longer roations.

I have been working graveyards for the past 3 weeks and 2 weeks before that days. So she has had plenty of time then. I will have to get up earlier in the morning and stay up a bit later at night(but then again with 4-5 hours of sleep how can I go less) When she is out of heat I will try letting her sleep with me again.

I think she might be a bit more whinny due to haveing so much time off with them over the holidays as well. I had 2- 5 day weekends so I think she got used to me be home so much as they are always with me when im not working.

Ashley,

I don't think the bark collar would work for whining. We used one for a short period on a constant barker. What he did was alter his bark to a higher pitch thing that the bark collar didn't pick up on. I'm guessing because a "whine" is a similar low level noise, it won't work.

The only time I've ever used a bark collar was on a Lab. She whined constantly with it on...

It sounds like Mitzy is just trying to get used to the new schedule and she probably doesn't "feel right" because she's in heat. I like the suggestion someone made of taking her and Jack out and really playing hard. I do this with my dogs every day I can and it works great.

:new_shocked: No thr bark collar does not work for whinners I know because I live with a Pap who paces and whines for hours. Nothing shuts him up. He's such a brat!

I would like a no bark collar for my neighbor

: Everytime one of his dogs bark BUZZZ!!!! Been years dealing with 5 dogs chasing everything that comes down the road, barking at all hours and talk abotu aggressive when those neighbors arent home. **%&$^^$ Police wont do a thing.

NOPE the collars do not work for whiners........I currently get to sleep in about 2-3 hr spurts....as my million yr. old chow chow that I took in suffers from midnight dementia where she walks around panting and whining and getting trapped in corners and then barks...I get up I take her out she wanders around for a minute then wants back in...if I leave her in the living room she gets in a corner and barks this goes on usually from 3-6:15 my alarm goes off at 6:30.....

this is one of the hings we all end up dealing with when we have dogs
