Marsha's post on another thread got me wondering, is there a book or type of book that you absolutely refuse to read? If so, what is it and why?

For me, I don't like biographies and avoid them whenever possible. I work at a school, so sometimes my job calls for me to read one with my students, but I won't do it for "fun reading" at home. Although I might consider it, if one was chosen for our book-of-the-month (willing to do it for the greater good. Lol). The same goes for Science Fiction or Futuristic books. I don't care for most sci-fy movies either, and the futuristic ones I like have to be in the "near" future. (I like I-Robot, I Am Number Four, Avatar, Aliens, etc.)

I won't read anything that centers around angels and demons if I can help it. I guess it was my past religious upbringing that makes me feel weird about them. I also try to avoid books based on harming children, although I tend to read a lot of books with children ghosts in them.

I'm with Sonya, no halequin romance stuff and no "Who dunnit" or mysteries that even resemble a who dunnit.

I don't like thrillers or horror, nothing with too much violence or "on the edge of your seat" kinda thing, or Science Fiction. I don't like the harlequin/romance genre or the explicit stuff, biographies not so much. Not a big fan of "self help" books either.

I find myself as I'm listing what I don't like then thinking...well I have read some in that genre, but generally don't like it... except horror, never read anything and I won't!

Another type I don't like is extra-sci-fi-y stuff (I know what that means, LOL!). I don't like it if the book has alien creatures as main characters, or other kind of mutant, non-humanoid based persons. I want to be able to relate to the main charachters!

Kim, my aunt is the same way. She will not watch or read anything remotely scary. She's been that way for as long as I can remember.

I don't think I've ever seen a book with an alien as the main character. I don't know if I'd be willing to read something like that or not. I've been seeing a lot of books based on mermaids, and I don't think I could read one of them either.

Yes, I've read them. They are the type of books my grandmother reads and while at the farm all i'd have access to. So I read them-I just didn't find them engaging and I always thought the humor was too cheesy if the author tried to add it.

I used to think i disliked the sci-fi books, but I read Ender's Game a couple months ago and it changed my mind. I'm sure there are still some that go overboard, but i'll give them a chance

No horror here. I think that's about the only thing I refuse to even start. [Other stuff I might quite in the middle if I don't care for it.]

I never would have watch the Green Mile if I had known it was a steven King story before seeing it. Its not what I expect from S.K. but loved the Green Mile movie, I might even consider reading the book, if I ever have time.

Something that also turns me off are main characters with really out there (from my perspective) names. I realize that is probably shallow at best, but when I read a subscription, if the main character(s) are "oddly" named, I will usually pursue another prospect.

I don't like to read romance either, on the subject of an alien as a main character. Dean Koontz wrote a novel named One Door Away From Heaven. The main character is an alien, but he is a changling and assumes the image of a boy about his same age. He is also one of the heros, there is also a crippled little girl, a recovery alcoholic, an elderly woman and a dog that work together to save the world from the monster aliens. It is actually a really good book.

That Dean Koontz book was very good- I think I have read all his now- you can always rely on him for a happy ending- SK, not so much!!

50 shades of thingummy would just about sum up my worst nightmare but the only kind of book I completely refuse to read is a badly written one (and there are HUNDREDS out there!!) I have given up on a few recently....

I don't think I've ever read sci-fy. I just know I wouldn't care for it because I don't like a lot of space type movies. I used to make fun of my aunt because all she reads is romance/Harlequin type books. Then I read a LoveSwept book by my favorite author, and I was completely shocked. It had some romance, but it actually had a plot and suspense.

That Dean Koontz book sounds like a sci-fy book I would actually like.

I don't read scary or sad if I can help it. I don't read Jennifer Weiner anymore, even though she's an amazing writer - not after Certain Girls, way too heartbreaking.

I've read a lot of great romances - great stories, period. Some not so good ones too, but lots of great ones! And you can't beat the romance genre for a guaranteed happy ending.

Haha Rabbitfizz - 50 Shades of thingummy ... I haven't read it. Heard it started as Twilight fanfiction, was all I needed to hear.

I don't read science fiction really ... just prefer my scifi on screen I think!
