I just got my first mini horse world and they all have very cute Arab heads and tiny little bodies. Rocky is a big butted, non-dished headed mini. I know he is a grade, but how do you get a non-Arab looking mini?

Anyone else have a mini built like mine?

I think Rocky looks great.

The pics in MHW are lovely to look at, but required a LOT of work to get! Clippers in the hand of someone with skill, and a practiced photographer come together to make those pictures.

Conformation is important, but a skilled clipper and photographer can work wonders with appearances. See them in the pasture in February, and they'd look like Rocky (who is a doll).

No- your not. My barn takes in tons of rescues that are no where near "araby"! I think Rocky looks wonderful. It's nice to see a "quarter horse" hind end on a mini.

Actually, there are LOTS of Minis out there who look just like your's! Seriously, there are not very many truly "Araby" Minis out there and those that are considered so are really not even close to looking like an Arabian at all. What you are seeing in the magazines are Minis who are fit for showing and presented at their best--usually at just the right angle of the camera lense. In all honesty, I bet your boy would clean up very nicely and I wouldn't be embarrased one bit to take him into the ring as an "all around" gelding after some conditioning, training and grooming. The only thing I noticed about him that I would change would be the angle of his front hooves which look to have too much heel in these pics. He might be club footed, but I doubt it... *and please note that I think the way his fronts look can be changed by proper trimming.

No Way! You know what I see is a cute little face with a gorgeous round quater horse jaw which just popped out at me in that pic of him trotting

He definatly has some hinny on him, doesn't he? Nice chest too. Slick, my other one, has a longer neck, but smaller hind end. He is prettier than "The Rock" but I love Rocky just the same.

I would like to see more minis like Rocky around. Not sweated to death. Rocky would never win a halter class with me as an owner, but he is a winner for me and my son just the same. I wish I knew his breeding though.

I think he's gorgeous! From what I've gathered about minis, is that the goal is to have a mini that as closely resembles a large horse as possible. Your guy to me looks exactly like a Quarter Horse or a breed like that. In the third and fifth picture, if you added the right background, you wouldn't be able to tell he was a miniature at all. It'd be great for them all to look like that, I'm don't like the look of the super refined minis. How tall is he?

Rocky is 34 inches tall. I have another one who is 35 inches, but seems like he is at least 2 inches taller. You can see what I mean when they are right together. So maybe Rocky is only 33 inches tall.

I think Rocky is beautiful!! He looks just like a full size horse in that one picture...and that hiney....a little junk in the trunk, nothin wrong with that!!! Her is my little stallion..nothing dishy here.

What a wonderful Quarterhorse in miniature!

As for people only having 'araby' looking minis - I get lots of requests for one's like you have as many people coming from full size breeds want what they had in miniature - lots out west want mini Quarterhorses! They want a butt and not a dishy head!

I've had hopes that people will eventually breed some of the different full size breeds in miniature. Wouldn't it be wonderful to go to a show with miniature Quarterhorses, Thoroughbreds, Shires or ? ? ?

Nope, you're not alone. Rocky is the only one shown here that I think truly bears a striking resemblance to any full-sized stock breed, but there are certainly many "horse shaped horses" out there without those dishy heads. Kody is more of an old-style Morgan type but I'm well aware that no one looking at him in the pasture would jump up and say "Oh my gosh, it's a Lippitt!" He just has a head that is sort of reminiscent of that sometimes.

Love the Rock!

One of the great things about the miniature horse is the variety of types you will see. Not everyone wants an Arab type, a Quarter type, a Morgan type, there is that special horse for them, for their reasons and purpose. As noted before many that are advertised as Arab looking have a longs ways to go. Your mini Rocky is very nice looking and I bet he could pull a cart quite nicely and attractively!

Thanks everybody. I am VERY new to the Mini world, got Rocky in July and he is my first, so I have a lot to learn and see. Too bad Rocky wasn't a registered mare. Rocky is amazing, that is for sure. I love him!!

Well, you know I am a huge Rocky fan and I adore Mr. Slick. I remember when I was new to minis and that first magazine arrived and I dispaired as my kids didn't look that THAT! :new_shocked: But then I learned that good, even great, minis come in all shapes and sizes. Arab is as arab does but you just go look at the best of our breed past. Many is the one who was not arab but had a heck of a neck, a butt, a shoulder. Put them together and you have a nice horse. Rocky is amazing in his own right. I have one at 37 1/2 that is GMB look alike not araby but wow what a body, head and neck! You have 2 very special guys. Wait make that 3, Loren is most special.

Hi,

You are not the only one that doesn't have the arab look believe me. I'm am a breeder and I can tell yah now I'm not breeding those kind. I don't like the look! All of my mares are pintos and they have the quarter horse looking head and they are very pretty without the dish.
