Non-Arab looking minis

Hi,

I see nothing wrong with your horse, I think minis are representative of all different types of big horses and the Arab style may be popular in the show ring right now, but a good sound quality horse is a good one no matter what type.

I do differ in my opinion from the others here. I think your horse looks like a Draft type I can't post a picture of a draft horse I found but the photo of him is beautiful go to this spot to see him http://www.drafthorseclassified.com/classi....php/listing/95

as opposed to my husbands quarter horse stallion who is much lighter built than the above Draft horse http://overofoxtrotter.tripod.com/sitebuil...es/whistle5.jpg

I have to say I get a bit annoyed that everytime someone sees a heavier build mini they call it a Quarter type. I live with Quarter horses as well as minis...and quarter horses are not the heavy build stock horses of the old days. ...sorry just one of my little pet peeves...lol

The significant difference between the draft and quarter build is that the Draft naturally is heavier built but also has a shorter thicker neck and a steeper drop of the hip to tail as that is were the draft horse has that pulling power from.

My hope is that we as mini breeders accept and appreciate all types of minis.

Rocky looks like a perfect little halter Quarter Horse to me. Some of them halter Quarter Horses are just HUGE!

[SIZE=10pt]Well all I have to say is I like your Rocky - and I like his big butt!!

I haven't read this entire thread, but I would say pretty much all of my minis are non-Arab type at this point. The mare in my avatar is "closest" in type to that, but even she has different features than an Arabian would.

I love the Arabian type, but it's so hard for me because I am constantly looking for the actual proportions and features and even though some of them in minis approach that, the overall picture is pretty much to me a typy Welsh or Shetland look (not that that's a bad thing, it's just not "Arabian.").

That said, I just don't see a true "QH" in miniature, either. I think too often people use the "QH" to describe the heavier built minis, rather than say one feature that mini might have.

I don't think you're the only one at all with a heavier type of mini or a non Arab type. I think you're with the majority of us, to be thruthful.

I agree with Liz...I love the Arab type and have always bred for it, BUT at the end of the day, in the ring, it should be the best horse not the best type of horse, that wins, and I for one have NO problem with being beaten by a heavier but better horse.

I do not see QH's either but that is probably because I really do not like QH's and we do not have them over here.

I see a slightly heavier, well proportioned, Miniature Horse.

There should be room for every one, I am sure that there is

Okay, so he's not a QH but he's a DRAFTER?? :new_shocked: Sorry, to me a draft is all about that thick, cresty, high-set neck and the cowhocks for stepping between crop rows, and the steep butt. Rocky has none of that- especially not the neck. He has a lowset, flat neck like a QH.

You are correct that quarter horses are not the heavy built stock horses of the old days...and to me, that means they don't look like QH's either! They look like thoroughbreds with big butts. Ugh. When I think of a good QH I think of foundation stock. They're supposed to be able to work stock and sprint. Both of those require a butt, being short-coupled and muscular. Not a peanut-roller headset and long legs. Then again I'm rapidly falling into the old fart category with Arabs too, as I'm getting very tired of seeing my favorite breed turned into wannabe Saddlebreds with ugly heads and no bone. Or brain, for that matter. ::sigh:: :eek:fftopic: Sorry, stopping now.

You are right, there are minis of all types and none of them (with a very few notable exceptions) actually look like the big horses. We love them for who they are, not who they're imitating!

Personally i prefer the QH looking type, the araby type are beautiful but at the end of the day my love for the QH's takes over and thats what i like to see in my mini's. I like to look out in my pasture and see Mini QH's.

Also my big butt feels more comfy with a QH type pulling me in a cart, as comparied to the araby/refined type the judges seem to love.

Both my mini's are the QH type and deff. have the QH look, so dont worry you are not the only one. :D

Well my favorite 'look' for a miniature is the 'morgan' and 'arabian' look. I think a cross of the two is the best; the build & stamina for driving, with a heavier cart - But the beauty to Win in the show ring! :aktion033:

Here's my little 33' gelding who will be 14 years old this spring, Double JJ's Happy Hollow.(he must have been about 4 years old when this picture was taken.) He's my first Miniature Horse and is the sweetest little fella. Nipper is his nickname....I call him my lil' mustang.

He has a particial dorsal strip in the buckshin part of his back.

I showed Nip as a stallion and as a gelding and did pretty darn good for us being beginners. I also trained him to the cart and we even entered a few driving classes...we had a good time!

Every time this kind of thread comes up, I have been posting pictures of one of the best horses I have ever known and that is Tibb's Sundowner / Sunny. He is not an araby type mini but is very, very well put together and really, I think on the inside, he is just almost supernatural he is so amazing to me. All I do is stand and hold his lead, Sunny does everything else. He is probably smarter than I am, but that may not be the best compliment he's been paid.

Anyway, even though I'd say Sunny is more a quarter horse type vs. an arab type, it has not hurt him a bit in the show ring. He's a 3x National Champion / 6x Reserve National Champion as a gelding and as a Junior Stallion was National Top 5, I think. He's got tons of Grands and his Halter HOF.

A good horse, is a good horse and they do come in different "types". Sunny's got a nice neck, wonderful proportions and a pleasant if not dishy arabian head. He is just a GOOD boy. (yeah, okay, bottom line is I love this guy!)

I love all different breeds of horses for what they all have to offer the equine world. It would be boring if they were all the same type! :bgrin And I love all the different minis too- I see some pretty nice horses posted here that are awfully cute!!

I lie a qrtr horse look. I have some that look like 1/4 horses, arabs, and I have one that looks just like a Gypsy Vanner!
