OK... I know Black Walnuts are poisonous to horses.

But I want to get a Butternut and a Heartnut tree. They are walnuts but what is called white walnuts.

Does anyone know if they are poisonous to horses?

I have acorns on these oaks trees out here that I know for a fact kills horses.

I do not know about toxicity level in those white nuts but I would only assume that any horse eating a bunch of nuts would be asking for some troubles so if it were me, I'd go for a tree that doesn't have nuts like that.

These darn acorns cause me to have to fence them off during the fall and winter months till we get these stupid trees chopped down. They are such a huge pain in the butt. In a case like this I'd go to the county extention office for guidence Shari.

Butternut is walnut. Plant them any place "away" from horses. Don't risk it.

This should probably be on the main forum. More people will see it there and it's very MHR.

Hi Marty!

Are acorns really toxic to horses? This fall, our horses ate TONS of them, I had no idea they could be dangerous! They would actually run out into the corral when we let them out each morning and pass right by the hay to eat the acorns off the ground! We had a neighbors Pot Bellied Piggy visiting our place (she Loved the ponies) and together they would stand there and eat the acorns like little piggies! If they are dangerous, we just got lucky and need to get those trees out of the corral and pasture!

Thanks Marty!

Acorns can be dangerous. I think more usually to young horses than adult ones. We had a mini colic and was treated medically and was fine. We think the cause was acorns. The horses here eat some every year. There's no way to avoid it since we have oak trees every where and the acorns do not fall all at once.

I know in England, they let pigs into the New Forest (? is that what it's called -- I am talking about where the New Forest Ponies are) so that the pigs will eat the acorns instead of the horses.

I wasn't sure if this was Mini horse related enough so I wanted to be on the safe side and post it here. But if one of the mods wants to move it to the main forum that is ok.

Thanks everyone. I just wanted to make sure. But drat..... was hoping the white walnuts would be different.

The minis are only allowed out in the main 10 acre pasture "sometimes". But the others are out in it in the afternoon most days.

With all the grass they have, they haven't been interested in anything else.

Maybe next year I can fence a section out just for some nut trees, so the horses can't get to them.
