One of the biggest reasons we got into miniature horses was for our kids...mainly our son, who had become frightened and nervous around our larger Arabians and Half-Arabians. He lost all confidence when his pony ran off with him once, albeit in an enclosed space, it still scared him to death. So...we went searching for one just for him. This spring we finally found the perfect one for him: our cremello pinto filly "Honey". She is the closest thing you can get to a puppy dog in a tiny 27" package. She can be let out of her paddock with no halter or lead rope and will follow us all around. She is as sweet as pie.
Well, we sort of pushed him into showing 4H this year (he is 9yo and in 4th grade so it's his first year being able to join). He was not eager, a little nervous about it still, but we knew it was a great opportunity for him and would be a good confidence builder. Tonight was the first night to bring your horse and we were, of course, the only one with a mini there amidst a number of larger horses. Little Honey and our son, were the talk of the place. She sure stood out and those poor Quarter Horses were scared to death of this tiny little thing zipping around them. They couldn't concentrate on the task at hand and were a bit nervous.
They are teaching showmanship and he learned so much tonight and, when we were leaving he kept saying I want to walk her, I want to put her in the trailer, I want to brush her, she is my horse.
The best part though, was as we were walking out the door, our 9yo son turned and said to us, "Next time can I bring my pony to ride?" Now, that was music to my ears!
