One of the biggest reasons we got into miniature horses was for our kids...mainly our son, who had become frightened and nervous around our larger Arabians and Half-Arabians. He lost all confidence when his pony ran off with him once, albeit in an enclosed space, it still scared him to death. So...we went searching for one just for him. This spring we finally found the perfect one for him: our cremello pinto filly "Honey". She is the closest thing you can get to a puppy dog in a tiny 27" package. She can be let out of her paddock with no halter or lead rope and will follow us all around. She is as sweet as pie.

Well, we sort of pushed him into showing 4H this year (he is 9yo and in 4th grade so it's his first year being able to join). He was not eager, a little nervous about it still, but we knew it was a great opportunity for him and would be a good confidence builder. Tonight was the first night to bring your horse and we were, of course, the only one with a mini there amidst a number of larger horses. Little Honey and our son, were the talk of the place. She sure stood out and those poor Quarter Horses were scared to death of this tiny little thing zipping around them. They couldn't concentrate on the task at hand and were a bit nervous.

They are teaching showmanship and he learned so much tonight and, when we were leaving he kept saying I want to walk her, I want to put her in the trailer, I want to brush her, she is my horse.

The best part though, was as we were walking out the door, our 9yo son turned and said to us, "Next time can I bring my pony to ride?" Now, that was music to my ears!

No matter what your son decides to do in life, I truly believe a good rapport and care of animals will serve him greatly. Perhaps he'll always have them in his life, but even if not, there is a basic care of living things that I believe teaches kids to respect all life (very important to me not to separate animals vs. humans as far as value of life), something that can't be wrong.

Glad he's having a good time and regaining his confidence!

That is wonderful!!

It was smart of you to get a mini to help build back his confidence.

My brother got a scare on a pony as a kid, the horse touched an electric fence and reared and took off at great speed!

At the time, my sister and I thought it was hilarious, not very nice

, but my brother lost his confidence and has never gone near a pony/horse again?? Which is really too bad!

Hope you son continues to enjoy!!

We are definitely excited about sparking his interest again and so far, the minis are doing just that. It is proving to be helpful to have others in the showmanship classes that are young and handling and riding the larger horses. Of course, we knew that.

My younger daughter is "chomping at the bit" so to speak, about starting 4H. She wants to get in the ring too. Looks like we may have to have her start showing next year.

How awesome is that!!!! Sooooo glad that it's working like you had hoped!!!! My kids were only half interested in 4H and we didn't pursue it. They've not gone crazy over the minis like I did. Oh well, I never got a mini for them, only for me.

Keep us updated on his progress Debra!!!!
