I have an older dog with incontinence. Since he has to wear a diaper he developed a tiny diaper rash spot. I never had kids, so stupidly never thought about this happening. Anyhow, tried diaper rash ointment and leaving the diaper off but he then licked the spot raw and added another spot. Vet gave me some meds and ointment but I cannot put the diaper back on nor wrap the spot and only other option we can come up with is a collar. Dallas is blind and that collar ( the bell type, cant think of name) freaks him out so we are in a pickle. He will not stop hassling those spots and its getting worse. Vet is out for a few days , figures, tech has no ideas. Do you have one or two? TIA!! Heather and Dallas

I'm going to guess you're using the plastic-ey type doggy diapers. Could you try home made cloth diapers? I would think cotton diapers would be softer, less irritating and breathe better. You could also wash and re-use them.

If I were you, I would go to the craft store, get some unprinted, thicker cottony fabric. Take it home, cut into triangles to fit... use diaper pin(s) to secure... and there ya go, cloth doggy diapers! It shouldn't be too big of a project.

There is a different kind of collar- a stiff collar the length of the dogs neck- You could make one using tubing.

It will allow the dog free movement but not allow it to turn it's head to get to it's "nether" regions!!!

i'm just getting ready to head out the door, so i don't have time to look it up, but they do have collars that work like the neck braces worn by people who hurt their neck for dogs who can't use the cone type collars.

edit to add: rabbitsfizz beat me to it, hehehe

His britches are the male dog tyoe that wrap around the belly, they are cotton but the area where a pad would go, is some type of plastic. I use reg feminine cotton pads. Know of the type collar you are speaking of, dont know if that would work either. Dallas used to be tied at times and was used to it, but now with his blindness different things or being tied ( cant see where he is at or what he's tied to), gets scared. I have a ton of small PVC, worth making one and see thanks! :saludando:

A couple of ideas to try. Bitter Apple, sprayed on teh spots. It is a spray that is supposed to stop dogs from lickign and biting things. It works great but not for all dogs. You can try it and see if yours is one it will work for though. made just fo rthis type of thing.

Other thing. There is a fly ointment for horses called SWAT, it is bright pink and looks ridiculous but works great. Has a small amount of antibiotic in it and smells and tastes terrible, you can dress the wounds with this and usually this will stop all licking and biting/chewing.

go tot he feed store and get some blue foot I believe it is called, It comes in a yellow bottle. It is an antibiotic and tastes terrible to the dog if he licks it. Be very careful with it as it will die things if you spill it. But he wont lick it much. Or you could get a round foam pillow and make a color for him. I did it for my boxer when he got a fox tail in between the skin and his penis. You cut a hold out of the middle of it and then attach it to his neck, I made a cloth cover for it and used Velcro for a closure but you could duct take it closed then cut the tape when you need to take it off

It is much more comfortable then one of the plastic collar things. And he can use it as a pillow when he sleeps.

The PVC wont work, I only thought he freaked and paniced with the other one Poor dude tried his darndest to climb momma LOL Will try one of those ointments, have some stuff in the barn I will check and see if that may work first Dallas doesnt seem to let taste deter him, he licks off that diaper rash ointment quick and it looks and smells worse than oil based tube paints
