Omolene or Purina Equine?

I use all Purina Horse Feed products.

I use Equine Jr. for my foal

I use Equine Sr. for my senior quarter horse who is over 20

I use Omelene 200 for all the rest: my breeding stallion,

my lacktating mare,

my maybe pregnant mare,

and idle horses roaming about doing not much of anything

Depends on your situation and the horse in question and his needs

I use Purina products too. I use different ones for different horses (because I can, lol)

Equine Junior for my foals and yearlings; Equine Senior for my 22 year old mare; Strategy and/or Omolene for the other horses. Pregnant mares get both, as they get closer to foaling. An overweight horse may not need any grain products at all, or horses that maintain their weight just fine with just hay.

Each horse should be evaluated for what it needs, and then decide what to give them.

LOVE Purina feeds... I use JR (foals and yearlings), Omelene 300 (pregnant & nursing mares), and Strategy (for eveyone else). My horses keep very good body weight on these feeds........

I use Purina Omolene 100 right now, but when they were yearlings, I used Omolene 200. I'm thinking of switching over to Purina strategy if I can get them to eat it.

We switched to Purina complete feeds about 4 months ago. I am very, very pleased!

We feed Purina Equine Adult 2x a day to our adults and Purina Equine Junior to our yearling. Everyone gets a small amount of hay as well, but only in the evenings.

I use Equine Jr. for weanling and yearlings

Equine Sr. for anything older than 15, horses that are being worked, stallions during breeding season, broodmares in the last trimester, and anybody that I am trying to get weight on.

Equine Adult to everybody else.

I LOVE Purina products....and have used Purina Equine Sr., Jr., and Adult for quite a while now. I just recently started using Purina "Natures Essentials" which is a pelleted diet "balancer....with a very high protein percentage. It's purpose is to balance out their diet with the vitamins/minerals they may not be getting in their hay. The one I use is called "Born to Win"....the high protein percentage means you feed much less of it. The horses seem to love it & are doing great so far.

The main reason I wanted to try this out.....was to see if I could get them all on the same thing.

I like the K.I.S.S. method of feeding!

We use Omelene 100 for everybody except my soon-to-be 20yr old arab who gets the Equine Sr. We had trouble finding the equine Jr. when we moved here, so switched to the 100 then. We also used Ultium, which I think is purine also, although I could be wrong, on one of my mares. It is great for putting weight on horses who are nearly impossible to get weight on,like my mare. The only problem we had with it was that it gave her too much energy once she put the weight on, so we swithced her back to the lower protine omeleme 100

I'm a Purina fan too - I keep a 30 year old QH mare and several middle aged minis on Equine Sr, and use Omolene 200 for most of the others.

Ultium is a Purina product. I like it, but feed with caution - it puts weight on in a hurry.

Since everyone that has posted uses Purina... do you go by the label when feeding? It says feed 1% per 100 pounds body weight. How much do you feed? My horses would BLOW UP if I fed them 3 pounds a day! (Im not good at math so I hope that is right???)

I use both but keep in mind the 'Equine' feeds are a complete feed, the Omolene just grain.

frekles93 your EXACTLY right. Thats why feeding a sweet feed does not give them the recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals without blowing them up like balloons. If your feeding a sweet feed you need to give ADDITONAL vitamins and minerals. Its much cheaper and easier to feed a ration balancer.

I was happy with Purina feeds until my feed store stopped carrying it and I had to switch to Nutrena. I switched from Stragedy, which was a good feed, to SafeChoice and am LOVING it! :aktion033: I was really surprised I would see so much difference. Nutrena adds additional vitamins and minerals that Purina does not. It must make a difference. :bgrin

I bought a bag of Safe Choice when I picked up my new filly just to try it. Local feed store doesn't carry it, but could get it in. My horses didn't really care for it, but maybe just one bag wasn't enough to give it a good try. I'm feeding Progressive Nutrition grass balancer with grass hay and they all love it and look good.
