OUR POOR DOG, LAST NIGHT RIGHT BEFORE THE STORM FOR THE FIRST TIME HE HAD HIS FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH A SKUNK AND GOT SPRAYED. HE DIDN'T LIKE IT ONE BIT, AND HE ALSO HAD TO STAY OUTSIDE, HE DID HAVE ACCESS TO THE BARN AND A SHED.

HELP, WHAT CAN I DO TO GET RID OF THE SMELL SO HE CAN COME BACK IN THE HOUSE?

THANKS

THANKS, JUST DID A SEARCH AND FOUND THE REMEDY

1 litre peroxide

1 Cup baking soda

1 tsp liquid laundry detergent (I had none, and used dish soap...it worked)

Hi Sandy.

I'll tell you what worked for my JRT when she got sprayed at VERY close range. First I bathed her with tomato juice and white vinegar, rinsed her thoroughly, and then shampooed her with Pert (because that was what I had closest at hand). She was clean as a whistle, of course, and absolutely no skunk smell left at all. Not even when she got wet in the rain.

I empathize with you and hope you can get your poor little guy fresh smelling again soon.

THAT IS THE BIG PROBLEM. HE IS NO LITTLE GUY HE WEIGHS IN ABOUT 115. IT IS COLD HERE, CAN'T DO THE WASHING OUTSIDE AND TO GET HIM INTO THE BATHTUB, HA, HA. HE IS BIG. 1/2 BLACK LAB AND 1/2 GREAT PYRNEES.

That is the exact same receipe that I used, and it worked perfectly. :new_shocked:

The Mythbusters show on TV, just did a show this week, that featured this receipe, a couple other home-mades, as well as a commercial product. This is the one with the best results, according to them.

Oh man...there is just nothing worse than skunk...gack!! :new_shocked:

the ONLY thing we have had work is straight tomato juice. nothing else seems to touch that smell. ours look so funny as they have a lot of white and will be pink for awhile. my neighbor would always go "oh your dogs pink so must of got skunked again" LOL

We have a husky that has gotten it twice. Dumb dog....

ANyway, soak then first in the tomato juice. I used cans of it to get the dog wet with. Put it straight on the dry coat so it isn't diluted and leave it sit as long as you can... like around 10 minutes. And if the dog eats it, not that big of a deal. Of course I try to discorage that as it needs to stay on the coat! Hee Hee.

Then use the peroxide, baking soad and dish soap recipe. MAKE SURE TO USE DAWN dish soap as it helps to break up the oil that the skunk smell is made of. I used that mixture to clean the tomato juice from the coat.

Finally, towel dry the dog, and I used a product called "No Smell" to help break up the remaining smell. This product is made by Pet Organics and disolves the smell without covering it up.

As for the bath... I have given them outside in the winter at around 50 degrees, but I use waterbed attachments to hook the hose to the kitchen facet so I can use warm water outside. Don't know how cold it is there for you, but maybe you can find a sheltered spot and try that? Then I put a leash on both sides of the dog's collar and find something to tie them to or someone to hold them so they can stand WAY back. (Old lead 10 foot lead lines for horses work great!) This creates a cross tie for the dog and keeps them relatively still as I shampoo away. I would caution the use of the house for bathing as if the dog shakes the water off it may be an issue if it gets on things ourside your bathtube. Do you have a "do it yourself" doggy grooming facility near you? Those are normally heated and may be an advantage for you.

Anyway, good luck and unfortunately have been there, done that.

Well when our dog got sprayed this year we bathed him in Coca-cola and it worked so well. After the coca-cola bath we bathed him with pert plus so he wouldn't be sticky anymore.
