I will post her pics on a whole different topic eventually. We just got her about a week ago ...but she has her little habits. She is 5 month old and should get about 15.1HANDS.

She has issues about being touched on the butt, back, belly and behind the front legs (just before getting under the belly) and between the front legs in front of her. Well she has this habbit or snipping a bit when i touch these area's ....and i dont know what to do. All the foals i ever worked with didnt have a bitting problem ..just a kicking and licking on

. She is just 5 month old but i want to take care of it now rather then let it go untill later when she can really hurt me. She is my little angel and exactly what i've been wanting and i plan on having her for her whole life so i want to get this fixed now.

I REFUSE to do anything physical to her!. Dad told me to use my 'grown up voice' and say NO really loud and i tried that but it didnt work out. Anyone here have any idea's.

Thanks,

Leeana

I know what I would probably do - but my best advice is to pm Nicole ( she goes by New Image on the forums. ) She will be able to help you - she trains young horses and old a like. Good luck!! Lori

Yeah, i know nicole. I will talk to her when she gets on yahoo messanger. If i was to do anything with horse training i would go for foal starting under 1yr old. Curing biting isnt something i've faced yet ....Nicole are you on, i know you have some expirence with that little Image of yours!

First off, I think she's just acting plain goosey and probably ticklish and not used to being touched everywhere. Common for so many youngins so don't let this get to you by no means. Remember, she's new in the world and knows nothing but should begin now. In the first place, I'd tie her up so she couldn't get me. Tie her fairly short and high, she does tie I'm assuming. And then just get her used to your feel and the touch of everything by brushing everywhere and petting her everywhere. Don't hesitate, just do it. Just a couple of short sessions a day should get her used to this.

After a few good sessions when she's comfortable with you touching her everywhere, with brushes and your hands etc. just then I would "set her up to fail" by giving her some extra length in that rope where she can reach and turn her face to bite you. Then, as daddy has said, lay into her with a great big "NOPE" at the same time. She simply has to be taught right from wrong.

i'll try that tommarow and for a while.

Now what would you guys do to get her over her fear of having people behind her? She is a bit of a kicker and wont let you touch her hind legs or pick them up. Now im a bit of a touphy when it comes to cleaning hooves daily or at least every other day. How would you get them use to that or get her to let me pick it up. I was thinking put a lead around her hoof and pick it up that way for a while ...am i going about that correctly?

Thanks a bunch guys

going about that correctly?

l would be scared to do that to a baby...she could hurt herself and wouldn't be learning a heck of a lot except to freak out. Are you afraid of horses l seem to get that feeling. JMHO

In addition to 'the look' and 'the voice', I've had really good results with T-Touch. You can use it from the tip of her nose to the end of her toes.

What's T-touch?

I'm not scared of getting kicked by a 5 month old filly, i just dont want to do something wrong in the training.

okay off to school now, sorry so short just wanted to check it really quick.

first of all shes only been there two weeks so i would give her more time to settle in. also she probably got weaned right before she left. did you buy her from the auction?? shes been thru a lot of stress so i would basically just feed her and love on her and get her used to you and her new surroundings before you try to train. just be sure everytime you are with her you do things correctly or you will teach her bad habits. remember everytime you are with your horse you are teaching it something

It's a type of massage, handling and training. Look for books or videos by Linda Tellington-Jones. I've used it on some rowdy and abused animals and it works wonders. It's wonderful for bonding and healing, and a very enjoyable way to spend time with your horse.

I will look into that T-Touch thing ...it sounds interesting.

We didnt buy her at the auction, we took a look at a forsale paper down there and called about a few. There was this place that said 'Foals for sale, plenty to pick from'. So i was like 'hey ...ive been trying to find the perfect foal for about a yr now because i just love working with them and teaching a baby something new'. Well we left the auction saturday because they didnt have anything to interesting. We called and took off the check out this place. I didnt really see anything that interested me. We were getting ready to leave and he asked what i was looking for b/c all he had was yearling and i was wanting something in the 5-7 month age. Well he asked what we were looking for and i told him and he said 'ohh you want a baby, fallow me'. Well he took us inside the barn and they were all sooo cute (he raises foals, keeps some and sells some (mostly paints and arabians from what it looked like ...couple palimino's). Well there was this stall in the very back (about 5th from the last) and i saw her and was in awe. I mean she was the prettiest thing baby i had ever seen and i fell in love at that moment. So she didnt come from an auction, even if she did i would have loved her anyway ..all my best horses came from a auction.

GOOD NEWS: Marty, i tried out that thing today. I had my dad hold her close (she ties and leads well *little peppy* but i just thought dad would have more control over her, also we have nowhere to tie her in the barn b/c it was snowing all day today) while i worked with her today for about 40 minutes. I petted her all over and ended with a little work on her feet after she stopped struggling and kind of relaxed into it all. She will let me pick up her back feet (only kicked a couple times, gave in pretty easy
biggrin.gif
...but we will see if she remembers any of that tommarow). She is still a little touchy about being touched under her front leg and on her front legs (but then agian i didnt work with her front legs much today, didnt want to throw to much at her in 40 minutes). Im going to get in a session daily untill she gets use to it. I also found that grooming tools work wounders for this to ..might was well turn a learning session into a grooming session. She got a treat afterward to so i think she doenst associate it as being 'horriable'!. She is really working out.

..only thing is that she is starting to just bite for no reason now which i expect, she's 5months. Im correcting that by saying 'NO' loud and pushing her face away (gently) so she knows what im trying to get through. Does that sound right?

I was cleaning her stall today and she just walks around when i do that and today she was following me and just nipping at me ..no clue why.

Too bad you guys aren't anywhere near me- it'd be nice to have some horsey friends here. Might make me like Ohio more... and I clean stalls, too LOL

Good lcuk, Coco- everyone's already given great advise. I have book on T-Touch (someplace...) for use on any animals. It IS interesting, and I've used it a teeny bit on cats. It made my mother's old guy (at that time he was - he passed in 2001) several times, and he usually walked away moving easier

Geez, I miss having a cat or dog around so blasted much

PUPPIES
new_shocked.gif
Sorry, I'm dying for a dog or cat- I hate being "alone" after Nathan goes to sleep, and want something that'll be a bit cuddly... Not that I don't get plenty of baby time, but that's not exactly... cuddly. LOL

I'm in NE Ohio- Akron. About an hour or so from Cleveland. As I recall, nearly everyone on the boards in OH is in southern OH... down near Columbus or farther. I might be able to talk hubby into a half hour drive once in a blue moon, but not much more

I dont live to far from Akron, we had a football game there tonight for PlayOff's.

I'd love to see your little ones (and big ones

)

Paint filly is getting use to being touched. She now will let me touch under her belly and all over without a single ear moving. I also can pick up her back left hoof, not the right yet for some reason. The front feet she still wants to nip me when i do them for some reason. She is also REALLY sensitive right around the pelvic region when i try to touch right where the thigh goes under the belly. She is really weird about that spot and being touched anyway back to far. I think its just because my hands are FREEZING, i would hate that to so im going to try gloves some, after she recovers (different thread).

Leeana

im ordering a video/book package on T-Touch tommarow when mom gets home with the credit card.

I don't actually have any minis (or heck, for that matter, many other animals at this point
sad.gif
)

Sandusky is only about half an hour from here, I think... or 45 min. But since I can't drive, and my little big man (who's roughly 3 1/2 months old) would have to come along... it's pretty much a no-go, I'm sure.

I swear, as soon as the snow is gone, Hubby's going to teach me to drive... or get me more driving practice, anyways.

Alot of horses seem to be ticklish in that area from what I've seen, so they react when handled there, even if it's just tensing up some. I 've also known more then one mare who reacted badly to having her nipples (I feel so bad saying that) cleaned. That was never fun, since one of the ones I was trying to clean was pretty dirty back there... and she'd dance all over, and eventually start picking up that back leg in a warning ....

Sounds like you're doing okay so far, though, just by being persistant. Make sure to reward the good behavior
smile.gif
I hope she gets better soon- I know my ex-friend had an accident with one mare who was herdbound. We seperated her and she ended up trying to go over a tightly-strung barbed wire fence
new_shocked.gif
Luckily she got away with only a couple scrapes and punctures, and nothing needing stitches.

Leanna...

Is the horse sensitive when you touch her armpits? Or so to speak.

Dealer is the same way, and he has been since I got him last January. He used to not let me TOUCH him at all. Going around behind him - pfffttt..

Now if anyone saw him at nationals in showmanship, he stood like a rock when people went around.

Anyways, my suggestion to you is that you take it VERY slowly. Touch her withers, and slowly work your way down her shoulder, and then to her sensitive area. If she shakes at all, go back up to the "safe" area, and continue rubbing there, and try again. All the while talk in a very sweet voice, with lots of "its ok" and "good girl" ect.

Someone from this forum told me that a while ago, ((sorry I don't remember who it was)) and it was amazing advice. I do take any and all advice given to me on this forum.

Leanna, I do understand where you are coming from, but you are getting in over your head. PLEASE listen to the forum members, they just don't want you getting hurt. Your horses are VERY important, and we don't want them hurt either. However, your stupidity and stubborness is getting them hurt.

Sending a pm...

You will need to be VERY mindfull and carefull of tieng her up for some time now. She will have pullback issues. Do not tie her up hard and fast, she will need something with enough give so if she panics, she wont hurt herself. But, strong enough so if she does pullback, she cant get loose, causing another vice. I would either use an inner tube set up, or the tie rings and a very long lead. Just tink aboutu 5 steps ahead , 'what can she do' , ' what will happen if she does that', 'how can I prevent that' etc. Also, contact Kay

good luck hon!

Billie gave some great advice that im planning on using for a good amount of time. Im going to carrey some Twine in my back pocket for when i tie her and try that out. I tried it out last night when i was grooming her in our grooming area and it seemed to hold good, but if it had to break it would.

I am also looking into getting a breakaway halter for her. We have them for all our big horses ..but i couldnt find one for a foal anywhere. Do they make Foal Breakaway halters?
