Finally got the vet out today. He refused to palp her saying its not worth risking a tear to palp her so he had a good look at her. he says shes definately not in foal and is extremely overweight

Also we finally found out why her udder is swollen. It has a fungal infection way up between. As many times as i have checked and cleaned her udder i never saw it. Its a really gross black fungi WAY up in the fold. Good news is we just have to clean with peroxide a couple times per day for 3 days and it should be gone.

I just dont understand how she got so fat. Shes been drylotted now for 3 months and i have not fed her anything extra. Normally shes very easy to keep in shape and people who know me know i am very careful on what i feed as I feel strongly about ponies and minis not being fat.

So she really fooled a ton of people myself included LOL. Dr Updyke commented on what a character she is

So I had a talk with patches and told her its diet and workout time. The good thing about patches is i can put her in the round pen and just watch and she will work herself LMBO.

Thanks to everyoen that asked about her!!

Sorry she was empty...... I know how much you were looking forward to that baby..... I dont get the vets not palpating a pony though...... even my 36 inch mares get palpated without a problem. I guess vets that arent used to ponies and minis are afraid though.

I know how disappointed you are we had blood test which proved inconclusive as we missed the early window then we did an external ultrasound and there looked to be enough fluid for a pregnancyso vet said yes he thought she was preggers and finally about 2 weeks ago another vet with smaller hands did a palp and nope shes open but the good news for us is her ovaries and uterous felt greatand there is no reason that she hasnt been in heat that the vet could see. The most curious of all is after the palp she immediately went into a full blown heat and has been with our boy ever since so we may have a late foal next year but hopefully she will be in foal after this week. This is our infamous Cookie that we got in 2003 who had her baby in 2004 but much later than the vet thought and now she's had a year off because she fooled us into thinking she was bred so we'll see. It is disappointing though if you truly believe a mare is bred. In our case I wondered as I couldnt do a hug and feel the baby but she too is very fat. So have to work on that for sure.

I have found the whole palping thing to be a little strange. We had one vet who was a tiny little lady that told us minis couldn't be palped, not even by her tiny little hands. We were under that assumption for several years. She moved away and a much bigger gal took over the practice and she will palp anything that needs it. Go figure!?!

yup. we have one female vet who will and one of her female partners won't. size doesn't seem to matter--maybe more of an experience/confidence thing?

Sorry to hear that, that's the way it works isnt it, if you want them pregnant -their open, and if you want them open-their pregnant.

Some horses(like people) just have slower matabolism then others. I have a mare that is a really easy keeper, if i,m not careful with her feeding, her back would hold water.

My vet says he doesnt palp minis because it is to uncomfortable them, I love my vet he cares so much about the well being of my babies as if they were is own

You tell that horse from me I am NEVER speaking to her again!! Oh and what is actually stopping you breeding her for next year??? That would take the smug look off her face.

Thanks for the update have been watching to see if she had a foal. Hope that next year you can get her bred.

This is what makes this thing so frustrating!! i DIDNT WANT HER BRED LOL. But once i thought she was I did get pretty excited. Just couldnt help it. Keep in mind for those that dont know Patches is a shetland pony ummm a rather large shetland pony
smile.gif
I had a beautiful shetland stallion lined up to breed her to and then thought she was in foal so cancelled her apt. Also didnt enter her in congress because i was so sure she was in foal. (i thought my mini stallion had gotten her in foal)

Its still odd to me that she has such sticky yellow stuff coming from the udder but im not a veternarian so ill just keep my mouth shut. It wouldnt be so odd except she has never been bred in her entire 7 years.

I was really suprised also that he wouldnt palp her being that she is 48". He said its just not worth taking the chance of making a tear or causing an infection. He felt sure from looking at her that shes just overweight. He did offer to do a blood test to which i declined as they are just so inaccurate.

Rabbit thats exactly how i feel!!! I cant tell you how many nights i watched her ughhhh. Its a good thing this mare has so totally stolen my heart or i might be madder.

We are going to feed her seperately now from the herd because i have a feeling shes been getting somoene elses portion. Hubby was shocked when i called him as he swears he felt a baby move over the weekend. I told him it was just her fat gut digesting all that food she stole from someone else hahahaha

Sorry to hear that! Sounds like my fat - not pregnant-- big bag mare!!

JJ

So sorry, Kay! I hope all turns out ok. I bet she's a pretty girl!

God bless

Fran

Sorry, Kay. I know you were getting excited about her being pregnant.....

Frankly, I don't understand a vet who is afraid to palpate OR ultrasound a SHETLAND mare! I think it was just an excuse.

Next time a vet pulls that *stuff* on you -- even on a mini, do what WE do! Our old vet had the equipment for ultrasounding, but he had good sized forearms, so *I* was the one who physically went in and ultrasounded with the vet's direction.

He had me do it more the once -- even though he had small vet techs that could have done it as well.

Though I don't care at all for Progestrone blood test, I find that Estrone Sulfate tests very accurate. I ultrasound my mini mares and have had them palpated - but if I have a question then I Estrone Sulfate them.
