I was recently thinking about what makes a pinto a pinto, I know what pintos look like. But I was thinking what if two solid color horses who are not pinto had a pinto looking foal. would the foal be considered pinto? and could it register with the ptha? I'm just curious.

Also, if two solid horses had a pinto foal, then you would know that at least one of the solid looking horses was actually genetically pinto

That just happened to a friend of mine who has been breeding minis for 20 years. A "solid" palomino and a "solid" buckskin just had a nicely marked double dilute pinto foal. High whites and body white on the baby. The only white we can see on either parent is a little tiny bit of white on one hind foot of the stallion

I think it used to be that the pinto registry (PtHA) required that at least one parent be a pinto. But I think that is changed with their new rule that they will register any horse that is listed on its accepted outcross papers as a pinto. They still need photos. For minis, the accepted registries are AMHA and AMHR. I am not sure about hardshipping rules - you should check with the registry at www.pinto.org.

There are certatinly LOTS of pintos that have come from 2 solid parents. We have 7 pinto minis and all but 2 trace back to solid color parents for their pinto color (yes, often Rowdy).

I think they PREFER to have horses with cross papers, but there are plenty of GRADE horses registered pinto as well. As long as they meet the pattern requirements.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I got interrupted in the middle of my reply!!

I think grade (unregistered) horses with pinto color still have to adhere to the pattern requirements of so many square inches of white color. But my understanding is that now if you have an AMHA or AMHR registered mini that says "pinto" on its papers, PtHA will accept it even if it didn't meet the old pattern requirements. This mostly benefits Paint horse owners, but might also help some mini owners.

ohh I get it, thats interesting!

So if you had a horse that was solid but both its parents were pintos could you show it and register it in the ptha?

Yes, if you have a solid color horse or mini from pinto parents you can register them as "breeding stock". There are classes at the Pinto shows for Breeding Stock HORSES, but not ponies or minis. But you can compete your breeding stock pintos (any size) in open competition for special awards. Check with PtHA at www.pinto.org and look under OCAP.

I have looked up OCAP and this sounds interesting. I have mailed pinto.org but they didn't answer until now if there are all shows in Germany (breeding/halter, driving, endurance) sanctioned by Deutsche Reiterliche Vereinigung (FN) member of FEI are eligible for OPAC? Does anyone know?

If yes then I would like to register two pintos with pinto.org.

Thanks.
