My husband has been taking Plavix and low dose aspirin for over a year now and he gets lots of bruising from it last night he go a bloody nose for the first time in years and it stopped and started all night, not bad but enough to be a concern. Today I took him in to the clinic and they asked what his protine levels are well he has never had a protine done --ever. Its my understanding that plavix like cumaden requires pt test done occasionally but never really questioned it.

Anyone here take plavix and low dose asprine and what has been you routine with Pts. And nose bleeds?

Gotta go pick up my daughter now back in a bit :saludando:

Joy, Coumadin (warfarin) and Plavix are both blood thinners and adding low dose asparin thins the blood even more. What they need to do is routinely do a protime, which is a test to measure prothrombin time or the amount of time it takes blood to clot. I am surprised that your husband isnt on monthly tests.

Hi Jo,

I have been on Plavix for over a year now too, along with several other heart meds, and low dose Aspirin. I have never had a protime test either. And while I bruise extremely easy now, I also clot very well!

I have been getting alot of nose bleeds lately, but I am not sure if it is caused by the very dry winter this year, high stress at work, or something to do with my meds. I go into the Cardiologist again soon, maybe he can explain why!

Hope your hubby is doing better!

Plavix/aspirin are made to allow platelets to not stick, where as Coumadin/Warfarin are for Fibrin clots. A LOT of Drs use Plavix/aspirin when they should be using Coumadin or even a Soy based product like Rutozym.

You need to know WHY hubby is on the meds. Is it for heart health or has he a history of clotting issues such as TIAs , PEs etc?

I have a genetic clotting disorder called FVL, or Factor V Leiden. I make too much fibrin which makes me prone to the DVTs, PEs, TIAs etc. I had been on Plavix , but learned that doesnt help my problem.

As for the Protime, like Lyn says, that needs to be done at least monthly, to make sure the dosages are correct. Heather

Hubby is on Plavix for leg cramps. He wakes up at night with really bad ones, the plavix seems to help it.

Yesterday he had some blood work done and his first Protime ever. The protime came back fine, but he had another test to see how long he would bleed.... well he bleed for a long time but Dr says its from the aspirin, and to stop it for awhile.

On his blood work everything came back normal or close to it. So I guess this to will pass and alls well.

Thanks for the info everyone.

Jo, this is me being paranoid so take that into account LOL

If his legs are cramping he needs to know why. He needs to treat the cause and not the symptom. I let Drs do that, and am paying the price. If its because of clots or micro-clots he needs to know what is causing them because if they are fibrin and not platelet, then the meds may help, but wont prevent a clot which can lead to a DVT. Not fun.

There are causes , such as mine ( FVL) but testing can be expensive since a lot are genetic. Does anyone in his family have these problems? or a history of Strokes?

: I have been on Plavix for about 5 years. The dr. put me on it because I was having blood clots in my legs every few months.(probable from varicose veins) Since he put me on it I haven't had another episode with the clots at all. The only time I had trouble with bruising was at first when i took aleve for back pain. Oh and hardening of the arterys at an early age(and other heart problems)run in the family so geneticly I have a good chance of all the problems that follow there.
