hello all! im just wondering.. who gives their prego mares pre foaling shots?? like pnemabort? or the others? i would like to know why. we have 2 mares to foal next year and have never given any other shots other than the normal yearly shots.. just kinda curious!

There have been long "discussions" on here before about this, so you might want to do a forum search on "Pneumabort". I think opinions ran about 50/50 and a lot depends on previous experience.

We give them because we lost 2 foals one year which MIGHT have been from rhino (never sure), so we gave them the next year and had our very first live foal. We also give the mare pre-foaling shots 30 days before she is due and in the case of our one live foal, the mare got the shots the morning of the day she foaled (at 304 days)!

The only shot we give our pregnant mares is the Ft Dodge 5 in 1 shot. We give it about a month before foaling.

Good Luck

thats the same with us we have never used prefoaling shots.. and we used to raise big horses too. between the biggies and minis we have never lost a foal... thats 12 babies so far! i was very curious to find out why people use them.. wonder if in different states the mares have a harder time??

we give the 5 way anywhere between 30-60 days before foaling (I say that because due dates aren't always accurate).

we have never given the Pneumabort and had two successful foaling seasons. We have not given it this year either and hope to have another successful foaling season this spring. The pros and cons didn't add up for us to make us consider it - but that's just us and it's different for everyone.

We don't give the prefoaling shots or vaccines either... We haven't lost a foal we've bred for since we stopped giving shots and vaccines.

we NEVER give shots to in foal mares, our vet is of old school and wont even let us worm them

during pregnancy. we have never lost a mare or a had a foal aborted during the pregnancy.

I always vaccinated my mares 30 days before foaling due date so that the colostrum passed immunity to the foals. I also kept the mares on their worming schedule during the entire pregnancy, and they had their regular vaccine twice a year and I would time it so that the second one was the one 30 days before foaling date. One of the causes of foal diarrhea (ONE of them) can be worms passed to the foal in the milk, so my mares received a dose of wormer the day they foaled. I had 40 foals born here, never lost a mare, never lost a foal, and the foals were strong and healthy.

Also the mares!
