Hello Everyone!
I am usually just a lurker on here who only posts occasionally. Well this is one of those occasions! I have a new mare who is in foal. It is not her first, I believe she has had 5 to date? My question lies in her behavior. She is coming closer to her due date, I believe. She was handbred then pastured with the stallion so could range from 320 days (first breeding) to 300 days (last day in with the stallion). She has progessed slowly and I have been monitoring her changes. About 2 weeks ago, her udder was full, decently hot, and hard, but not bursting full, and she was waxing! She did this for almost a week! Since then she has lost her udder? I mean, it has shrunk about half way in size with a lot of swelling in front of her udders and cooler then it was to the touch!! I discussed this with my on site vet and he wondered if she was having a phantom pregnancy, however I have felt her foal kick on multiple occasions and so have other people. I have even watched it kick her side to where her whole belly shakes! So I am doubting phantom pregnancy.
My question is, has anyone else ever expierenced this? My understanding has always been, that when the udder stays full, hard, and hot to the touch that she is getting close. But I've never seen them go backwards in progression after staying that way for a week!
Any advice would be much appriciated!
