Thanks for the pictures of your expecting mares. I have one that looks just like that. Unfortunatly she has done this before and produced no foal. This is an Issue that has come up after she has given us two great foals with no problems at all. Since then she has gone through a full false pregnancy and then last year just very full and pear shaped with no real heat till last spring. My stallion noticed something before I did and they might have done the dead, but they were running in the pasture together as we had just moved last year. I tried to get her tested in the fall but the vets office messed up. Since then my stallion fell ill and had to be put down. so now she is presenting signs that look just like the other mares. Her udder is not very full but when I squeeze there is a discharge. I got some test strips for water hardness and it showed the full range for impending birth. so now I an just very confused. If it wasn't the dead of winter and cold I would just leave her outside and wait and see, but I have her in the stall. When I had her blood work done in the fall we thought to test for thyroid and found out she was a little low and she in now on thyroid meds for now. (that's why the office didn't put in for the pregnacy).

so anyone have similar situations? and the new pool water hardness tests has anyone used them with any accuracy?

Sandy,

Hope you filed a stallion report -- just incase? (Sorry for the loss of your stallion. That's rough.)

How far along do you feel the mare is? You have the option of palpation, ultra-sound (which I prefer, but not all vets do), blood test (which only is good within a specific time of pregnancy), or to just wait it out.

We have really good luck with the water hardness and ph test strips.....We had one false pregnancy a few years ago. When we used the strips on her the test always remained in the "middle" readings and never budged.

On a truly pregnant mare, yes, I had great results although I was going nuts as the mare was overdue. When she finally foaled, she had a big drop in pH and a big spike in calcium.

I would have the veterinarian out again to see what is going on.

Years ago I had a mare who was ultrasounded and palpated as pregnant who lost her foals around 5 months without producing an udder, finding a fetus or anything - she was stabled at night and was observed by the farm owner during the day and nothing was amiss. There was a fetus at 45 days on an ultrasound and at 5 months the vet felt a foal on palpation... yet no foal even though the mare shaped up, had a bag and then went into a full blown heat cycle....one of the most bizarre things I had ever gone through and I was convinced aliens were sucking the foals out of her during the night as there was no logical explanation that I could figure out.

Hope you get some answers....

Thanks for the replies at least I know you have had results with the test strips. My vet doesn't have an ultra sound for minis. Not enough of them her I quess It helps to know others have this type of expierence.
