We've been talking about milk prices but what are the prices of tomatos where you live? Went to the store today and just plain old generic tomatos are 2.60 a pound. Local tomatos are 3.60 a pound and I didn't dare glance at the organics. Leaves me thankful I grow my own but I'm wondering how large families feed their children healthy food.

I only bought the Roma tomatoes at the store yesterday, they were on sale for 99 cents/pound. I usually get the on the vine kind, they were over $2/pound (might have even been over $3), don't remember the exact price.

Well, we aren't a large family here but I still have to shop smart.

We grow out own tomatoes too but have those only in season. Otherwise--I buy whatever veggies are in sale. When it comes to tomatoes I only buy the tomatoes in the vine and only when they are on sale. A good sale is .99 per pound, but 1.29 works too.

I buy asparagus and broccoli on sale; corn too. Carrots are usually cheap enough. I buy lettuce when it looks good.

Normally I go across the back road and pick potatoes after the picker has finished--we get our winter supply of potatoes free that way. This year there were no potatoes on either half of that section so we are out of luck.

Next year, I think I'll expand my garden even more and start some canning. It's interesting to see prices in other parts of the country.

If you are going to start canning, better begin buying jars now. WOW, another item that has really gone up in cost. Any yard sale with good ones is worth buying there. I have many that I bought yrs ago and refused to get rid of when I stopped the canning efforts. Now I have a small supply to use, several dozen. BUT, a friend bought about 40 doz at a close=out yrs ago and have option on those. If garden gets in this Spring, I'll re=think them.

I cannot say I know, because we grew our own and I had previously stocked up on "petite diced" that I use in (my limited) recipes

What I do know is the USA controls so much of the world's bread basket. We're the cornucopia. IMAGINE if we ever got our own act together when it comes to energy independence

We grow our own during the summer........ but for canned diced tomatoes, I buy a case at a time during our store's "case sale" which they do twice a year.

They just had a sale and the case was $18.99 It should last until next spring when the next sale comes up.
