Mare was down in field so I took her to foaling facility to meet vet.Cervix is dilated and mare is going to abort foal. She has been up and down for 7 hours, and some contractions.Vet says we have to wait and let it happen so hopefully foal will be in right position to pop out.Vet tech is watching her on camera and will handle everything.Had 9 mares bred for 2007 and this will be the second foal lost.I have been breeding almost 20 years and I think it is time to take a year off and possibly stop breeding Minis. The stress is taking a toll on my health. The market is down and many people in my area are unwilling to pay for nicely bred well cared for animals.I am going to sell lots of my brood mares, but I really worry about where they go and how they will be cared for.I have soem that are timid with other horses and will not do well in a big herd or where they have to fight for food.Others are very agressive and I will feel sorry for other horses that are in a field with them. Here I place the horses with others so they have the best possible life.I also hate to separate certain ones.Horses have best friends too, just like people.

I am so sorry things are no better.

It can all be so stressful,,,,,but please give yourself time.

Best thoughts your way.

Oh Darn!! So sorry to hear you have another mare in trouble. I was hoping the rest of the foaling season would go smoothly for you. Keep us posted on how your mare is doing...I'll be thinking good thoughts for both of you.

I'm so sorry about your mare and her foal. I guess what we should hope for now is for the mare to be OK. I know it can be stressful but please just give yourself some space before making any long-ranging decisions.

I hope things get better.

Sorry to hear about your mare, hope she comes through it okay. I understand your sentiments - weve not had the best start this year either, and it kills me to have people wanting to pay next to nothing for what you work so hard to get and take care of. Hope things get better for you.

We were hoping that everyone would have a great start to their foaling year, but it's been so odd for so many. I'm sorry to hear that you are including in that group with the problems you have had.

Hugs to you, and strength and comfort to your mare.

God Bless....

Heather

 Oh no, you sure havn't had a good start on your foaling season this year. I hope things will turn around for you soon, and that the rest of your foals will be born healthy and happy, without complications.

Thats just the worst having to wait for them to deliver a dead or premie foal. I feel so sorry for the mares and helpless, just like u. I really hope she is fine and all the others have great, healthy foals for u.

im so sorry. unfortunately i know how heartbreaking it is to have a late term abortion. sending you good thoughts for the rest of your foalings

I am so very sorry about your mare - I've been there also and each foaling season, I pray that it will be uneventful - sometimes it is, and other times when things go terribly wrong, it sure makes you wonder why you do this year end and year out. May you have blue skys ahead with your remaining pregnant mares.

What terrible news. I am so sorry to hear about you mare losing her foal. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.

Tammie~

I'm so sorry, that is so sad, and terribly stressful for you.

Here's hoping that the rest of the mares have no problems, just live healthy foals!

Oh Bev, I'm so sorry.........please let us know how your mare is after.

I know just how you feel about the whole breeding thing which is why I was done after last year. And I have the same thoughts you do about selling some to right homes and seperating others

The vet was called in at 11:30AM this Sunday morning.Cervix wide open no baby and severe contractions.God was with us when vet poked a hole in the sac and reached in.Volumes of water-this mare was huge. After much groping she found 1 leg and had vet tech hold that leg while she went back in for second leg.Baby was feet first and legs up.Vet got both legs and pulled and out came an almost white with red head and beautiful blaze filly who was very tiny. The cord had at least 10 twists in it and baby was long gone.Mare has retained placenta, but otherwise fine. After about 1 hour she even ate some of her breakfast and nibble at some hay.She will get oxytocin for several hours and if placenta is not passed by early Mon AM vet will begin antiobiotics and uterine flushing. This mare will never be bred again.I will find her a special little girl to love her and be her best friend.Mare is feeling much better now that foal is out. This is my second filly lost from this 2007 foal crop.I love the babies, but I am worn down after almost 20 years.I had thought several months ago about greatly reducing the size of my herd, NOW I AM SURE I WILL DO IT and keep the older ones to just hang out.I need to reduce my stress level and by stopping the breeding end on my farm that will be a big part of stress reduction. Now I have to start searching for the right homes for these animals since I am totally responsible for their well being.2 angel foals from here so far-not so good.7 more foals due from 4-19 until 6-29.I sure hope things get better.
