Purpose of Whiskers

I got this interesting topic and thought it would be of interest to others.

I have always heard that, yet I've never seen a horse show any signs of distress or difficulty after having them trimmed. And I keep all my guys clipped. In the winter especially since they can accumulate ice which has to be uncomfortable.

I quit trimming eye whiskers after one of my horses injured his eye the day after I trimmed them. Eye injuries are horrible.

I had a horse with partial vision loss and always left her whiskers. Odd thing I noticed is that on her blind side, the muzzle whiskers were always shorter than on the visual side so I'm making a guess she used those whisker enough to wear them down a bit.

I always try to leave the eye whiskers. Even when I'm showing if I can. Although my mare in particular will suddenly try to scratch her head on the clippers while she is getting her face done. She's lucky she still has both eyes let alone the whiskers.
