This is what was on the label on the box that I "accidently" purchased.

Warning(s): Extreme caution should be used when administering the product to foals, young and miniature horses, as overdosage may result in serious adverse reactions. Do not use in horses or ponies intended for food.

Lesson to all....read warnings very carefully.

I have never checked, but wonder if our inserts have changed. Dr. Stephan Jacob from Quest promised to check into that.

I have told any where I do business to put up a sign about warning Quest use with minis, or at least tell the buyer and lots have been very cooperative.

My Vet does not recommend it at all now.

I will never stop warning anyone I can. :saludando:

Here in Holland it is said that for Quest that horses have to be older than 4 months and heavier than 200 kilo´s = 440 pounds.

But I won´t use it any more either, I have used it without problems, but a shetland breeder here has also lost 3 stallion because of this wormer, and since febendazole is said to be milder and more effective I will use that.

For new horses I always worm them with ivermectine and pyrantel first and then do a 5 day febendazole, maybe that will help to kill most parasites before the 5 day dose so they won´t have a reaction to the incested worms dying all in one worming.

I never had any problems.

We have no warnings on the insert BUT if you read it carefully you can work out for your self, as Linda did, that it is not safe for animals like Minis.

It is also not recommended for them, but in Europe you have t read between the lines t get that information!!

I have used Quest with NO problems- I have also used Bute with NO problems.

Since joining this Forum I do not use Bute unless I am absolutely SURE it is the only drug for the job (ie Laminitis) and it is under Veterinary instructions (my Vet leaves the dosing to me and I have a special little spoon weighing thingey I bought at a Garage Sale that weighs out the powder (we do not have paste or injectable)

SO- basically, unless there was an absolute necessity to use wither product I would not do so.

It has been proven that Quest is not safe- I do not believe it is safe for any horse but would never recommend it's use on Minis.

I'm like rabbitsfizz, I don't consider it safe for any horse--I used it once shortly after it came out, back in the days when we had only Morgans. Our horses were on a good deworming program & I was reasonably sure they didn't have a huge load of encysted strongyles. I wasn't concerned with the medication causing neurological symptoms (though in truth at the time I don't think there had been many reports of that problem yet). In actual fact the horses wouldn't be overdosed on one tube each.

If I know a horse did have a big worm load--or if I even suspected he might--and certainly if I didn't know the horse's deworming history, there's no way I'd give him Quest....nor would I give him anything else that would cause a large die off of the encysted strongyles. That's only common sense. Large die off = intestinal damage = colic. That part of the Quest danger isn't restricted to Minis--I've heard of full size horses dying of colic after being dewormed with Quest.

I used Quest that one time, and overall wasn't all that impressed with it. For administration I prefer the paste or liquid varieties over the Quest gel, and as far as effectiveness I saw nothing that indicated it did a better job than the Eqvalan I used the next time. Shrugs. Maybe it did work better, but I have no way of knowing that. I won't be buying it again.

I have asked the Fort Dodge/Wyeth Animal Health reps about the use of Quest in Minis and they sent me the article that was written on the topic. It was interesting to note that the article was written about Vermilyea Farms and the fact that they use it on their Minis all the time with no problems.

Will I tell my clients with Minis that it is Ok to use Quest? Of course not. There is too much anectdotal evidence. I do believe that the deaths are linked to overdose but I couldn't ever it it to my own.
