Hi there,

I have a question pertaining to Oxytetracycline. I have a very small foal who has contracted tendons, making it hard for him to straiten at the knees. I started him on Rejuvenaide at 5 days, but was wondering.....He is now 9 days old, is that too old for a shot of Oxytetracycline to be beneficial?

Also for those of you who have experience with Rejuvenaide, how many CC's did you give your foals?

Thanks,

Joy

I have used Rejuvinaide with great success. This year had a filly that was contracted and over at knees... I think I was using 2-3cc (just followed what the instructions said) We used it for about 2 months and for about 3 -5 wks also used no bow bandages with standing wraps from fetlock to armpit 12 hours a day and limited turn out. She is perfectly normal now.

When I was breeding QH/Paints and Warmbloods... we had a QH colt that we used Oxytetracycline on. He was at least a month old, so I would think you are in a good time frame. We also had the farrier out every 10 days to make adjustments in his feet to help stretch the tendons... he is probably 6-7 yrs old now and was a perfectly normal colt after a short time.

Joy-

When my filly had this earlier this year, we started her on Rejuvenaide also. I also had the vet check her over and he said the medication can be given up to around 50 days with success, so I would think you could give the Rejuvenaide a try. She straightened up with the Rejuv and time and good hoof trims. But, be sure to check with your vet if you have any concerns.

For Rejuvenaide, I gave whatever the directions called for -

Hi Julie,

May I ask... What are no bow bandages? and where did you get them from? Would you by chance have any photos of your filly with the wraps on?

Thanks Peggy, I appreciate your input

I didn't know you had a foal with a problem, glad to hear she straitened up! I sure hope this little guy does

Rejuvenaide is good so carry on with that. I think you will find that most folk on here would not recommend wrapping the legs (my vet and I agree with them), it can cause awful sores and also discourage movement. Have your baby out in the paddock as much as you can, the more he moves about the quicker the tendons will stretch and his legs become 'normal' - but perhaps you can put him and his Momma somewhere away from other foals, who might want him to play and therefore take too much exercise before he is ready? Also, if possible, when inside give him the biggest stall/space that you can, so he has plenty of room to keep moving about.

I would also have a word with your vet - depending upon the degree of contraction.

Good luck, please let us know how he progresses.

I agree - I would, however, be interested in knowing more about the wraps vs using the tetracycline?

No bows are quilted wraps, or padded wraps. I used 8" , basically it created a cast.... We ONLY did this after several weeks of no results with normal turn out and rejuvinaide, she was actually getting worse. And... the wrapping was only done overnight. Usually did several nights, then gave a night off. This was under direct supervision of my vet after our other efforts were not working.

I also would recommend you work with your vet. Before I do anything I discuss it with my vet, whether they need to see the horse or not. In this years case the vet saw her several times before we started getting aggressive with the treatment.

When we were using the wraps her turn out was limited to 2 hrs in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon and in a large 11x10 stall at all other times.

Can't say what is right for your horse, just letting you know what worked for us in 2 tough cases.

Thanks everyone,

He has a 1/4 acre pasture to romp in and a 10x10 stall at night. And yes he is separate from the other foals. He is too small to rough house with the other kids LOL! He runs and plays, he doesn't seem to mind is malady

Dang he's cute, talk about a pocket pony LOL!

I started out giving him 1/2 CC on his 5th day as the instructions say 5cc per 100 lb. He is only 14.5-15 inches tall(sire is 26")Then I upped to 1 cc. The directions say to double if needed so I started yesterday giving him 2cc's a day. Does that sound right? Did you guys give it all at once or divide it morning and night?

Also, Peggy I glean you have misgivings on the Oxytetracycline? Did you have any issues with it? I was going to contact another vet in the area today to see if they had any.

The vet we started using when we moved here is very nice but I am NOT impressed, I think they are more like cow vets. I am going to try another, although they are considerably farther away. I miss my old vet in Colorado.

Thanks everyone,

Joy

Joy, I've used Rejuvenaide here a number of times successfully. You're giving about the dose I would for his size. I give it once a day. I've had my vet do the tetracycline treatment on contracted tendons in the past, but it's been quite a while. Generally, most of my foals correct themselves with just normal exercise.

Joy- Sounds like the right amt of Rejuvenaide. My girl was a bit bigger and I used about 3 cc, if I recall.

No misgivings at all with the Oxytetracycline - if my vet felt it was needed, I would have used it. Just was interested in hearing more about the wraps, as I had not heard of that before. But, we felt time, Rejuvenaide, and good trims would do the trick and it has. If you need a great vet to check him out- bring him on down here - my vet is excellent IMO

Typically Rejuvinaide has worked great for any of ours with contracted or lax tendons. The amt you are giving sounds right.

As long as I see improvement with Rejuv...then that is all we use.

Keep us posted, hope he improves daily for you

Took my little guy in this morning to have the oxytetracycline administered. All went well.

I was told to keep him stalled for 5-7 days to “let the medicine work” then he can be turned out as much as I wanted. What did you do? What where you told? I find it strange keeping him confined when the objective is to stretch the tendons?? Just curious what you guys did. Back when I used to breed ( late 80’s early 90’s) I wasn’t aware of these options ( Rejuvenade, Oxytetracycline), I don’t believe they were available. We just turned the little ones out, trimmed as needed and prayed a lot LOL! It’s nice to have options, I just want to do it correctly. And I find asking someone who has actually gone through and used the medicines and witnessed what worked and what didn’t is the best way to go.

Let me know would you please.

Thanks,

Joy

Well today was amazing,

Our little guy is much improved. When he first gets up from laying down, his front legs are much straighter, after 10 minutes or so he'll start to go over at the knee again, from being tired I'd guess, but the improvement is notable

We are still giving him the Rejuvenaide as well. I think with time and trimming he will be good! So relieved,I hated thinking about the kind of 30 year life he'd have being so crooked.

Thanks for your input everyone.

Joy

That sounds like great news, Joy! I bet he continues to improve and you'll never know there was a problem.
