I saw on here recently, that the horse is supposed to account for 80% of the picture. Does the picture have to be horizontal or can it be vertical also?

Also, I saw that there is not supposed to be any objects in the background. What counts as an object? Is a shelter or fence post considered an object?

Would love to see examples if anyone would like to share for us first-timers.

We do the side shots horizontal and the front/back shots vertical..

I thought the rule was that there just couldn't be any other horse in the background, but I may be wrong..

We take our photos either in front of our tan garage door (for a simple, non-distracting background) or at the end of our driveway with the field across the road as our background..

You guys are awesome!!! I've been beating myself up over these pictures, and I'm sure that it isn't really all that hard. I've been trying to pick the ones that didn't have a car, house, or shelter in the background. And I just couldn't figure out how to make it so the horse was in at least 75% of the picture (front/back) with it being horizontal. :DOH!

I have got to say so far AMHR has not kicked back any photos and some were questionable but there is one thing I learned that I will pass on. Standard photo is 6" wide by 4" high, if you flip those around (4" wide X 6" high) make sure it is only for the front and rear shots as if it is a side shot they will s-t-r-e-a-c-h them to make them fit. Don't believe me, I'll show you my AMHR registered weiner dog as proof.

I had virtually all of my photos returned this past year by AMHR, sent the same photos to AMHA and they accepted them without any problem.

Make sure there is nothing in the background, and as far as other horses not one hair of another horse even way in the distance...and yes they did stick pretty tight to the 80% rule. I do not have a digital camera and it was an expensive pain in the neck meeting AMHR requirements.

This might be because AMHR requires that the feet / legs be off set. For my AMHA pictures, I always stand the horse square and basically do a show-type pose and picture.

With my AMHA pictures, from the left profile shot, you can only see the left legs, and from the right profile shot, you can only see the right legs.

With AMHR pictures, the horse is not to be standing square and from the left profile shot and from the right profile shot, you are to be able to see all four lower legs (so the horse must stand offset).

Additionally, for AMHA's head shot, you need only show the head. For the AMHR head on shot, you most show tips of ears to feet.

I find the AMHR pictures a bigger pita to capture BUT I think the reasoning is better and that it's good to see identifying markings more fully in each picture.

I haven't had any problems with pictures for AMHR. All you need to do to make sure your horse is 80% of the picture, is to crop it that way. I shoot all kinds of pictures of my horses; some zoomed in, some not. If there is too much space or other objects in the pics, I just crop those out in my photo editing software. As to size, I just make mine somewhere inbetween AMHR's required sizes. My photo software doesn't make them the exact sizes AMHR requires, but all of my pictures have been accepted and fortunately for me, none have been stretched.

It's really pretty simple and I have been sending the same pictures to AMHA as well so I only have to do one set of pics for each horse.

That is a good idea. The AMHR required pictures will work for AMHA (but it's possible for AMHA ones to not meet AMHR's criteria).

So far, I've not had picture problems w/ any of the registries.

Also, I order my prints online (York Photo). It's only 10 cents a print (or less on sale) and fast turn around. I'm too easily irritated to try and print them myself.

But, in Jill's examples, there IS another horse in the background of two of her pictures. I guess I am just not getting this picture thing at all.

I think they may make allowances when the other horse is showing is actually just a fraction of the dam of a suckling foal being registered

Right! I just crop as close as I can and some fraction of another horse in the picture doesn't matter as long as the subject horse is 80% of the picture.

I found someone who had posted examples of pictures that had been accepted and refused and that really helped me take mine. I can't find those examples now, though

. I was still nervous about whether or not they would accept mine but they did. These are the ones I sent and they accepted them all (and yes, I know my horses are conformational nightmares, especially the mare, lol. But I love them anyway, and they are just my friends, they are not making any babies):

I hosted my digitals on photobucket and printed out my prints through the company they use. It was pretty cheap and I got them in a few days.

Thank you guys, you have all been so helpful...especially those that included examples. One last question...the horse has to standing still right?

I had my gelding walking slowly because the little snot wouldn't stand with his feet where I could see all of them otherwise, but they told me he couldn't be running around or anything. They said the slow walk I had him doing should be fine though. (I called a couple of times before I sent them out, I bet they were sick to death of me).
