My uncle just recently got 5 belted galloway cows, he had one bred a month back, yesterday he saw a small stream of blood in the pasture no wonds on any one, would you assume that cow aborted?

I would assume that either the cow aborted or one is in heat but if there was alot then yes probably the cow aborted. Should be able to tell if you look closely under the tail.

Nicole,

We have had cattle for the last 40 years. We raise Charolais but here in Maine there are loads of Belted Galloways. Their National sale has been here for the past 15 years. As far as what your Uncle found would more than likely be from one of them bleeding out after having a heat cycle. cattle cycle about every 21 days and are in standing heat from 4-24 hrs (6-10 is ave). It would be very easy to miss one in heat if you are not looking. The cow that bled out would have been in heat about 24hrs earlier. He will need to watch the cows very close starting about 16 days from finding the fresh bloody disharge if it was fresh. Usually early morning and late evening are when most will show heat. However if he is checking when he feeds them they will be more interested in eating and will not show much. Beef cattle are much tougher than dairy cattle to catch in heat and way tougher than any horse.

Good luck

Mark

Feel free to PM if you or uncle have any questions. I just finished terms as pres of our state beef association and have contacts with answers to anything with beef.
