I heard just before Christmas that there is a way to convert VHS movies to DVDs. They are saying that the VHS player will be obsolute in the near future. I am wanting to convert my VHS movies (around 200 of them) to DVDs. I am a movie buff and I would hate to have to rebuy all of these.

Thanks Carlene

I converted home movies but I am not sure that you could convert commercial VHS to DVD if there is some sort of security on it to prevent duplication.

You sure can, just have to have a VHS to DVD Recorder, we've had one for a couple of years. Ours is a Sansui, I'll try to find a link and post it in a bit.

I AM doing this today. A few months back I bought a VCR/DVD Player Recorder. I can Record Both ways from DVDs to VCR Tapes, OR VCR Tapes to DVDs This player/Burner will also play music DVDs, MP3s and regular Music CDs. Plus I can Burn my Horse Pictures on a CD and that DVD Player will Play Back that CD with Pictures on the TV screen as Long as the format is JPEG~!! Pretty cool eh?

This is the one I have and of course it has ALL the bells and whistles on it for great DVD Picture and Sound surround~!

Thanks everyone I appreciate all the help. I just knew there was something on the market but didn't know what it was called.

Just wanted to add this~ I just copied a tape onto a DVD Was Very easy~!! And Made sure the DVD Played after wards . And BINGO it did :aktion033: ~~

 Now for the Bad news.~! And weigh this one Very very carefully before making up your mind in getting a VHS/DVD Burner~! Now this unit is only a few months old. so it IS new OK? Well YES It recorded the show on the DVD everything is great EXCEPT that Recorded DVD Will ONLY Play BACK on that Machine~!!!!!! It Will Not play on my regular DVD player NOR will it play in the Computers DVD Player~!!! And Says so in the Book~! Because of the many different Software Programs to record DVDs may or may not play in Other DVD players~! And it also says DVDs burned in a Computer may also NOT work~!!!! I am a quite disappointed in this ~!!! I can not then Burn a Show or whatever and Take that DVD to a friends house and play~!!!!!!! If There is somebody else that has tried to Play on Other machines after burning them please let me know as the way I see it. Once you burn that DVD You are pretty Much Locked into ONLY playing that DVD on THAT machine and that machine only.

Now IF my DVD Player was a Pioneer if may have I am not sure about that But the Burner is Pioneer and my regular DVD player is a Toshiba~! and who knows Who made the DVD player in this 4 year old Dell~!!!

I have a DVD recorder and it's a different brand than the one that my husband has in his big truck, but the DVD's work just fine for us. One thing that I did notice is that the DVD's have the plus "+" or minus "-" (example: DVD+R or DVD-R). You MUST get the DVD's that will work for your recorder, or they just won't work. From what I understand, some players will play both and some will only play one or the other. However, I haven't tried recording from VHS to DVD, so I don't know about that. So far I've just recorded stuff off of the satellite for him with no trouble.

Just for information, my recorder is an Emerson and my husband's tv/dvd combo is a Magnavox.

Just keep in mind that this is a public forum, anyone could read it, and the copying of Store Bought VHS tapes is a criminal offense......copyright laws will apply..

We're movie buffs too and had close to 300 VHS. We have just slowly picked up the movies on DVDs by going through the bargain bins at Walmart. I think now we're down to only having about 25 VHS left. Well and then of course we have to buy any new ones that come out so our collection is moving in on 450....

For the most part Tapes DVDs and others are Copyright Proteced and will Not be able to copy. I put one in just to see the notice and the machine will Not Record those. I am talking about and coping My Own Libary of Tapes to DVDs. and That is OK. If you look at the copyright It Syas copying for Distibustion or sale is prohibited. But not for ones own libary. And that has stood up in court. But like I say Most ALL Movies have that enqirpted copyright imbedded into the movie and these machines will not make copies from them~!

example: DVD+R or DVD-R)
Hmmmm I have both.... What I was recording on for the first time was the ones with the - in them. But I do have DVD + RW So I will try one of those and see if I can play the DVD on Other DVD players~! Thanks for the tip...

It Worked~!!! BUT It was NOT the - or the + that you have to look for it is Version of the DVD~!! Some versions are 1.0 some are 1.1 others at 4.7 and so on. I have to use version 1.1 to be able to play the DVD on other DVD Players~! And it does~!! BUT it does not play in my Computers DVD Player but that is just a small disappointment not a huge one~! Just that I would get this cleared up.
