Has any of your horses ever have any reactions to their shots?

2 yrs ago my entire herd reacted to the west nile/4 in one shot

Yes, last year I changed vets (my moved) and new vet recommended the flu/rhino for my 12 yr old gelding (I had mixed feedback on whether I should or shouldn't) so I did have him get it. But he reacted so bad to it that I no longer going to give that vaccine. My 2 minis go nowhere and no horses come to my place; so I have very slim chance of my 2 minis being exposed.

He was extremely sore in his neck and depressed/lethargic behavior. He couldn't hardly lower his neck to graze or drink. Lasted about 2 days. I was so sorry I gave him that vaccine. Perhaps it would have been different if it would have been given in the rump.

Only once, when a new vet gave the shot in the neck instead of her hindquarters. She was so sore that she could not bend her neck all the way down to eat or drink. I ended up giving her banamine for a few days and raised her feed bucket and water bucket up a bit she could reach them without difficulty.

Worst reaction I've ever had was to strangles IM vaccine. My now senior half-arab gelding would get golf-ball to tennis ball sized swelling at the injection site. While I was boarding my horses, it was a required shot, so he had to have bute for 5 days around the injection (2 days before, day of, 2 days after). Now, that I no longer board, none of my horses get the strangles vaccine (if I ever have to again, we'll try the internasal kind).

My APHA mare had a mild reaction to WNV vaccine last year (3 year on the vaccine), very small localized swelling at injection site.

Can't recall any other reactions in the 20 years I've had horses.

My gelding swells up very bad with the rabies shot. He started getting this shot when I became his owner, in 1999. At first it was just some swelling on his neck. Each year it got worse. 2 years ago his neck looked like he had a football attached to it. So we tried it in his back leg... Not again. He could hardly walk for almost a week.

My two year old gelding has been fighting a reaction to his shots since Sunday. Lethargic, head down and eating slowly and moved like he ached all over. Acted like the start of colic but good gut sounds.

I was extremely happy Wed morning to have him holler for his food and have his ears up and alert.

He has always been touchy on changes or stress. He is still not quite himself but better each day.

One of the mares had a sore neck and everyone else is fine.

Thank you all so much for your replies. My horses just had their shots Tuesday and some of the things that have been described on your replies is exactly what happened to my horses. Lethagic, depressed, holding their head down, and not real interested in their food. I had called my vet that same night they got their shots and he felt there was nothing to worry about. Tonight they seem to have their usual appetites and are more active. This is the first time I have experienced shot reactions with my horses and it was very scary. I was worried to death. Thanks again for your replies. It has certainly put my mind at ease to know this is something that can happen.

I just read that Britain and other European countries are outlawing shots in the neck. Has any one else heard this?
