Well Rosey has been just fine after aborting her foal on Saturday. Until this afternoon when she started rolling and thrashing around.

I thought colic............but no fever, poop was normal, and she was willing to eat. She just couldn't stand for longer than a couple of minutes before going to roll around, and Rosey does NOT roll, ever!

The vet said to bring her to the clinic.

Blood was pulled and my vet decided to flush her uterus.

Here's where the odd things start happening. Rosey's cervix was still completely wide open, as if she had just had the foal.

And her uterus was filled with blood. The vet flushed her out and spent a good 45 minutes with his arm in her trying to find a tear or something in her uterus to explain the blood, but he couldn't find anything.

He also doesn't know why her cervix is still open, as far as he could tell it wasn't torn. He told me a mare's cervix will usually be completely closed a few hours after giving birth, and it's normally completely shut by 12 hours after birth.

So Rosey's is still totally open 48 hours after giving birth.

She's on a sedative, banamine, and two different antibiotics. He wants to reavaluate her cervix on Wednesday.

We don't know about the blood or where it's coming from, so I'm to call in the morning if Rosey doesn't seem any better as she may have an internal bleed somewhere.

Her white count was low.

Can everyone please send some good thoughts this way

My thoughts are with you. I had a mare, multi National champion producing mare, whom had a horrible dycostia and we thought and vet after it was over, we were amazed at no tears, no scarring ext she looked just fine and fat and sassy for about 6months after that happend......but ends up her cervix never fully closed and she went down hill fast once she went downhill, lost weight and was just getting a systematic infection in her, discharge was just creamy, white, thick; I ended up putting her to sleep about 10 months after her foaling.

Hope you vet finds the cause of her problem and is able to fix it.

Oh Lindsay, you have had such a rough time! Prayers for you and Rosie!

Her cervix should still be open at this point. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but the cervix will be open for several days after foaling and gradually close up. I've had many mares flushed and infused up to a week after foaling/aborting and my vet is able to do it because the mare's cervix is open.

I don't know the reason for the blood though. Is your vet sure her uterus isn't perforated? Keeping you both in my prayers.

 Oh no...what rotten luck you are having there....when it rains, it pours. I sure hope the vet can find out what is wrong with her, and help her to the road of recovery. Fingers are crossed for her!

Thank you all for the good thoughts :aktion033:

Rosey seems to be doing pretty good this morning

Will see how she is this afternoon after the banamine has worn off from last night.

Thanks again

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We know you are strong just know we're here for you - this is no hobby for the faint of heart. The rewards though are so huge - hang in there!
