May be taking a quick weekend trip to SF in a couple of weeks - haven't been in many years, any recommendations as to places to stay, things to do and see? Will do the Napa Valley wine tour on Sunday if we go.

Places to eat in San Francisco

1. Izzys Steak House

2. "Cha Cha Cha" on Haight Asburry awsome food cuban toppas , but no reservations , or credit cards, go there for lunch to beat the crowd, order the fried new potatoes, calamari, and diijon chicken

Napa

Scarlett Inn on the Silverado trail for a place to stay overnight. its a B and B

Franks Family Vinyard, located on the last road between the connecting road between the 29 and the Silverado trail. Plum jacks also on the Silverado Trail for Tasting .Mondavi is pretty. There is a good French restaurant in Yontville called Gionti Bistro (spelling could be way off) but thats on the 39 road, not on the silverado. You have to go to Cha Cha Cha though on Haight in SF, its the best food , and order a pitcher of Sangria

have fun

We love San Franscisco! My favorite was Muir Woods...those giant redwoods were incredible to see. Also...the Carousel Museum.

There's a place on the wharf called Fishermans Wharf and it's a nice place to eat, linen table cloths, waiters, it's not fast food, but sit down. They have the BEST fish around. Then there's Ghirardelli Chocalate Factory across from the wharf and it's nice if you like chocolate and they have all kinds of shops. Also down from the wharf they have Pier 57 or something like that you can see all the people going down there and it's w/in walking distance and it's on a pier also and it's filled with shops too and it's very nice. On the wharf they have seals lot so seals that just lay there and dump over boats so they put nails in the back of their boats to keep the seals off.

Also to go with your wine in Napa you'll have to get some San Francisco sour dough bread. Oh my gosh it's heavenly. We miss it here in Mo. We can't get it here and were spoiled coming from Ca. Also, seeing how you have a car you might adventure to the curvest road in the US. It's a lot of fun to go and do. It's about 1/2 mile long and it's real curvy. Get yourself a tourist map. You can take pictures from the bottom of the hill and the top of the hill and you coming down the hill it's just something fun to do and say you done it. ALL the years I'd been to SFO and NEVER did it and finally did and was glad I did it. So many times you think oh I'm not going to do that, that's silly or dumb and it turns out to be a fun thing, it's all in what you make out of it I guess.

So what EVER you chose to do have fun exploring and enjoy yourselves. TJ

We were just there in June, of my birthday tour stops !

TJ was describing pier 39, if you go right down to the bottom you will see the sealions, and lovely shops on the walk down.

We stayed just a street of fisherman's wharf, and it was lovely for a stroll in the evening. During the day they have food stalls on the pavement and the chowder and fish filled rolls looked amazing, but hubby hates fish ! There is a bakery here to and you can do a tour or go in and have breakfast they sell their own bread and you can see it coming over head in baskets from the bakery, service was ok but you had to get your food at one end and your drinks at the other.

I really enjoyed Alcatraz, but you would be best to book in advance over the internet, they do an audio tour when you get there, one of the ex cons was there doing book signing so it was interesting to talk to him, the ferry goes from pier 27 I think.

When you walk towards golden gate bridge, from the wharf you will see the end of the cable star line, go early and get on the tram go up into sfo. Here if you look up hill, then right you will see the 'mall' area where they make the chocolate Ghirardelli, the factory is on the second floor, on the ground floor is just the ice-cream booth. My eyes were bigger than my belly in there !

We didn't get time to the wine country, but I drink White Zinfandel at home so maybe it was just as well.

I think when you go to any city, it's worthwhile just doing the open top bus tours to get your bearings.

Have a great time....take a coat it's colder than Ireland !!

Thanks for all the great tips

. The trip is on again off again, we may decide last minute to go depending on airline rates. I have been there once as a twelve year old, but that was a looong time ago lol. I do remember Fishermans Wharf and the good sourdough bread, and of course the cable cars and steep hills. My daughter has a friend who has just moved there, that inspired her to go - and another friend & mom are going so it would be something of a mother/daughter getaway. It's not a great time for me to leave, with Nationals around the corner, but I may do it anyway.

Marty, wish you were closer and I would do just that! I am going to send him to "camp" while I'm at Nationals if I can find him a place. Trainer who rode him for awhile last year is now about 10 minutes from me. The riding will do him good, and mainly I won't have to listen to what a chore it is to have a big horse again while I'm gone.
