I made a mistake in judgement last night.

Thought I would share....

I had my fillies tied in the isleway after working them.

I began to put fresh water and hay etc.. in the stalls.

Little Anna (tiny 26.5") 8 months old, was ties to her sliding stall door.

I always make sure the door is secured.

Well, I needed to get in her stall to change her water..

'just for a minute....' her door was not locked...

I'm filling the water bucket, she decides to freak,

pulling back, got the HEAVY door off its track. I drop the bucket,

run over and catch the door from smashing her, my kitten

is screaming ( the door somehow pinched her tail), the water

is running all over... OMG I'm yelling WHOA!

I managed to let Little Anna loose and get the door off the kitten

(she's fine) and to top it off, my temporary tooth, (getting a crown)

popped off in all the excitment!

Wheeewwww...

I know better than to tie a horse to a sliding dooR! Lesson learned!

p.s. I had a frozen river this morning to remind me of my mistake...

i swear they are just like kids! if you do anything "for just a second" they will get in trouble! glad it turned out okay but i can just imagine your heart rate when all this happened. Sounds oh too familiar

Ha ha, I just went thru this....they have a crown cement at WalMart that you can use to reapply your temp crown until you get back to the dentist. Mine stayed on for an additional 3 days when I had to put mine back in. I felt really proud of myself performing this small dental procedure. :bgrin

 I think we've all had those "stupid" moments. Glad everything turned out okay! One of my dumb moments was leaving the feed cart (empty but had scraps) unattended for a moment while I got a bag of dog food and the yearlings were eating the scraps.....no biggie, but when I came back out one of the yearlings had ducked under the handle and was backing up with the cart "following" him. I thought for sure he'd freak and I'd have a disaster! Luckily he was one of the calm ones and I grabbed the cart and unhitched him.

Phew, I am happy everything is okay and we all learn these kinds of lessons and look back and think "what was I thinking?"

One of my "what was I thinking" is now I know do not tie a horse overhead (like to a branch). I used to do this the brush some of them until one reared and I realized how just a slip and I'd have let a horse hang itself.

Another is don't sit in a cart that is not hooked and tied down to a horse. When I had my first easy entry cart, first thing I did was set the shafts on a little 2' wall and sit in my cart. This was immediately followed by a backwards summersault and me looking around to see if anyone saw.

LOL, we've had those "moments" here too. Always good when you can look back and laugh after everyone survives the crisis! One of my worst involved a 31" stallion, a 16 hand mare and a semi-hysterical 15 year old daughter...... :new_shocked: LOL.

This is sooo true! I can't tell you how many times I've learned the hard way (not being long-time horse people like so many of you) by doing something like this. I'll confess my most stupid moment: When we brought home our VERY first mini. We had bought 3 at one time, but the breeder insisted we only bring home the mature mare for a week or so to get used to it. She thought having the mare and two weanlings would be too much. She was right! So, we didn't even have our fencing completed yet, so I get the brilliant idea to use one of those 20ft tethers that are for dog tie outs and wrap it around this big rock thinking that it would keep the mare from getting away. I know, I know! How totally stupid is that??? Something spooked Missy and she took off through the pasture with that boulder bouncing behind her! Which spooker her even more! Lesson one: If I can pick up the rock, the horse can surely pull it along!!!! And don't EVER use a dog tether for a horse! I was so lucky she didn't "burn" her legs or something on it!!!! What an idiot!

:saludando: Wow........ sounds like something that would happen here.....lol! Luckily no-one was hurt! But that can and does happen to the best of us! Thanks for the story!!

now that it's over and done with and no one was hurt - i am :new_rofl:

isn't that just the way with a horse... how do they ALWAYS know when you are doing something you shouldn't "just for a second"

i know we have tons of such stories from around here too.. luckily i can't remember any of them right now!

We had a "just for a second" moment here at our house this weekend. Our son was taking a roll bale of hay in to the pasture and he left the gate open long enough to pull the tractor in. The next thing he saw was Skippy's tail going through the gate. Skippy is a quarter horse. He was outside by himself trying to keep Skippy from getting on the road. We live on a fairly busy highway. Luckily, I told my husband to take the puppy out to potty. My son said you should have seen his Daddy's face when he walked around the front of the house nose to nose with a horse. Everything turned out okay, other than a few hoof holes in our's and our neighbor's yards. Skippy's desire for some sweet feed overruled his desire to be free!!! He's basically a pig.

In "just for a minute" can get a mini in a lot of trouble.

You were very lucky this time and I bet you won't let it happen again.

Someone from above was looking out for you and them.
