I have a 4H/FFA horse show on the 21st of this month.

I have a couple questions.

Both of the horses that I'm showing are in need of a clip job. I have a dark horse (Silver Smokey Black) and a light horse (Palomino).

How early should I clip them?

What clipper blade sizes should I use where?

And if anybody has any tips for a small town horse show where minis are outcasts, that'd be awesome. Lol.

Thanks!

I would Clip in a 10 and nothing else. They don't like or understand "Makeup" and Razoring. I show a local shows monthly. What I do is a little baby oil gel on their nose, some hair gel on thier mane and forlocks to help with friz, and Tiny bit of black over the eyes. They still look Finshed, but not overly noticeable.

I would clip both about a week before you show. But it is diffrent for each horse and how fast their hair grows.

I have been using a size 10 only on everything, (Bridle path, legs, face, body) but its not exactly what I need for their faces, lol. One has goggles, and another has a beard that almost needs trimmed daily!

I've never used the face goops, but I do use cowboy magic on their manes. I don't like to mess with the manes too much, especially with foals. I do know that some breeders/owners put A LOT of mane goop (I have no clue what they use...LOL!) in their manes so they almost lay flat. I honestly don't really want that for a relaxed show. Especially when I'm not showing to win or anything; just for experience on both ends.

I would also clip using a no 10 blade about a week before the show , I use a 15 on the head and bridle track and a 40 on the muzzle and under the jaw bone , I dont razor either , I use highlighter or baby oil gel on muzzle ,(the dark one looks really nice on silver smokey black) above eyes and on the roots only of the mane and forlock , I rub a little inside the ears and on the front edge too , spray all over with show shine and put clear varnish on the hooves

I use a 10/15 on the body about a week before. Then I clean up the head again. I do the muzzle, eyes and bridle path with a 30 or 40. I hate the razoring.

I use a 10 on the body, cause I hate pink on pintos, about 5 to 7 days before a show. Then the day before I wash and trim up the ears and face with 30, 40 on ears and around eyes, 50 on muzzle. At local shows I'd use only a little oil on the face and eyes or skip it altogether. Most locals (like 4-H) don't know how to prep their horses like we do for a breed show.
