I saw something about coloring the noses black. He has very few spots on the end and was wondering what it was, or do you dye it?!

The color of the nose is the color of the skin, it is never dyed, but sometimes a horse with dark skin will get nicked with the razor and some people dab on majic marker or black bees wax to cover the nick. It sounds like you have a app, they usually have a molted nose any way. just clip it short and add oil when showing.

It's not legal to alter a horse's body color for showing. You can dye manes and tails if you are dying them the same color that they naturally are, just covering up sun bleaching, etc. You can also use black hoof polish on the hooves.

Have fun showing!

I know many people do use the black face 'goo' as I like to call it to cover up mottling. Many do it on their varnish appaloosas and apps with just characteristics so the judges don't know that they're appy. I think either way is fine-try using the clear and then try using the black and see what you like best.

Thats what I thought.

Been showing big horses for years, never had to worry about the appy stuff.

Also ....as far as their striped hooves, clear the hooves... they take points off if you paint them with black hoof polish on a appaloosa, we were told that many years ago at a rated show when we showing our leopard stallion and we didn't know and she was a carded judge ....we always used baby oil gel on the face on our black leopard appaloosa filly, not the black goo, but that is whatever your preference would be as well and depends on what look you would like to have but we always razored our appaloosa's. Yep, I was told if your horse was an Appy, they want to see it as one. I would not worry about the mottling and show the horse as you usually do....

I agree - let the appy color show through proudly! There was a time when apps weren't very "accepted" in the miniature show ring, but that thankfully has passed. I've been some beautiful horses that just happen to be appaloosa. The mottling is a characteristic that should be shown. Plus putting enough black on to cover it will mean that you will be black from head to toe within a few minutes of being in the arena

I wouldnt cover it. I had also been told never try to hide the appy markings as if you do the and the judges figure it out they will doc you points.

Its very little mottling. When he was shown he had black polish on his feet.

I think it's because I'm so anti "big" appy I can't believe I have a little one haha
