Alberta is fighting a number of raging wildfires, and just now on the 11 pm news they showed video from Slave Lake--a wildfire has moved into town, and the fire is burning building to building. The town hall has burned, as have hundreds of other buildings. The person reporting said that the belief is that by morning the town will be gone.
Fire!
OMG!!!! That has to be one of THE MOST terrifying things ever. I know people who've lost everything to fire, and it is so devastating. Praying it is over soonest, and no people or animals lose their lives.
When I lived in Cold Lake, come spring/summer, the air would often be filled with ash and smoke from fires all over the Provence...for some reason, the prairies burn.
They're saying 40% of the town as been lost. I just saw a photo of a suburban neighbourhood completely burned to the ground. So sad.
When I first heard it last night they were telling residents to get to large parking lots, because the two fires had the highways impassable, with no way to get the people out. Big kudos to the emergency services up there - so far, it sounds like there has been no loss of life.
The wind has finally died down here today - still windy, but nothing like the last couple days. I hope it stops blowing up north too, to give them a chance to get the fires under control.
