Did you ever see something you have looked for for years and then one day you're cruising ebay that "there" it is! You bid. You know you really do not have this extra money but gosh it is SO perfect so you bid and you WIN :aktion033: You contact the seller and tell her how special this is to you and ask please please pack very well for the trip. This dream thing! is a hanging lamp. Look!

I paid more for the shipping $25 than for the lamp! the total was $49.50. Now look at it.

I emailed the seller and she says she insured it for more than the value and for me to take it to the post office for a refund. :new_shocked: Ummmm...howz that work now? The post lady brought it to my door and said she knew it was broken. I had 2 options, refuse it and it would be returned to the sender or accept it and let the sender know it was broken and get a refund.

SO..I am at a loss now as to what to do. Any EBAY wonders out there who can advise me? I am so sad, I matched my amber Gone With the Wind lamp "perfectly"! I'll never find another one!

Is it possible to find the shades only for such a lamp? Thanks and sorry I'm crying over this. It's just I never ever spend foolishly and this one time I did and wham!

 Im so sorry! Thats really harsh. My friend is an avid ebay user. I am asking him but I dont know if he will have time to respond. If I dont get back to you, email/pm me and remind me to find out what I can. I am so sorry that happened.

Yikes :new_shocked: What a bummer! I have never had anything get that broken! Doesn't the seller have the proof of insurance slip? I would think that she would have to get the insurance refund and then refund you. Let us know what happens.

Ok, Here is what my friend said:

"ok. if the seller insured it, then she did so with the post office. she needs to bring the lamp and all packaging to the post office and let them know she needs to file an insurance claim. if in fact the seller was lieing and did not pay for insurance then the post office will tell her it was not insured and to take it up with the seller. if thats the case the only way she will be able to get money back is if she paid through paypal. if THAT is the case, then she needs to file a claim with paypal and explain what happened. paypal will guide the process from there "

I hope that helps. Good Luck!

Do you still have the package it was shipped in?

If the seller insured it -- there will be a "INSURED" stamp on it (mark or sticker) -- take the item and package to the post office and ask them there what you do.

If there is nothing on the package to note that it is insured, ask the seller for a copy of the insurance paperwork from the post office.

If you strike out on both of those -- ask the seller what he/she thinks you should do --- and if that does not work -- contact Ebay and get them involved. They can help you resolve it -- especially if you used paypal to pay for it -- did you?

Good chance it was insured and the post office will be able to tell you how much it was insured for.

Oh yes I have the box and the pkging and it does say insured on the label. My mail lady gave me the impression it is up to her(the sender) to refund me not the post office here. So frustrating. I did request a copy of her insurance slip. Thanks so far. :aktion033:

Watcheye, does that mean I need to ship the broken lamp BACK to her?

Deb what you need to do:

Take the item, the entire package, if you can get the insurance slip that helps too, and if you can get the price you paid from eBay take that. If it is insured, the PO wants to see the proof it was, like the package. They also need to know how much you paid for the item. The PO is to refund you the value of the item, not the sender. That's the purpose of insuring it!

I've had items break during shipping and this is what we had to do.

I was told once at the post office. That they when you insure something with them, all they insure it for is if it gets lost, not breakage. So I would check with them.

What about the shipping costs? How do I recoup the $25 it cost to ship. Yea right.

Did you pay with paypal? The also have an insurance type claim to file...check ebay too!

There's a form that the seller/shipper has to fill out too..... And you need to file with the postoffice. The post office will give your the forms and steps to go through. You should get the shipping and the cost of the item refunded.

However, the seller has to prove how much the item sold for (I think). So I hope that doesn't mess things up.

I never try to cheat with the insurance because some shippers request a copy of the sales from E-Bay and it can backfire.

Dimi, Your amber hanging lamp is NOT impossible to find..... I've seen (and sold) similar over the years..... just be vigilant and you will find another very much like it. As a matter of fact, I will keep my eye out and let another anique person I know keep their eye out for you.

Thanks MA, just what does one call the big shade thingy? I looked all over EBAY today for a replacement and there wasn't a one with that wide a base.

I think my friend ment for you to take it to the post office. I dont know because I never have had to do this kind of thing. It looks like everyone else knows whats going on but if need be, I will ask him to clarify. ^^

You just need the shade? That's going to be harder.

In general it is an amber hanging lamp shade....but you should do a general search of the whole lamp as well. And look for the word "vintage" too.

Good luck!

Yes, you need to contact the post office as THEY are the ones that will be refunding your purchase price.

Yes, they do cover breakage but may ask to see the packaging to determine if it was packed with sufficient padding.

No, you don't need to bring anything showing the amount you paid for the item. The item is insured for a particular amount and that is the amount you're refunded (along with shipping).

You'll want to do this sooner rather than later.

That is where it gets very tricky! If the seller packed it crappy they won't cover  They will probably say it needed to be double boxed etc...Good luck - I would still consider filing with ebay - seller is responsible for packaging correctly

OOOOOOOOOOOH! It was packed very very poorly! Just wrapping paper type paper. I have that feeling that the post office will say it was inadequately shipped. Then where am I?

The latest email from her states the insurance number and amount insured $39. That I am to just deal with my post office and they will refund my money but not the shipping. She said she'd refund me $10 in shipping as a courtesy! Courtesy! Heckfire packing it properly would have been the courtesy. I paid less for the lamp than $39 but with shipping it was $49.50.

At Christmas I ordered a cherry glass fronted cabinet off ebay and it arrived with the glass shattered and it was packed wonderfully. They immediately credited my paypal for the full amount. I guess there is always one bad apple. Guess I'll take it and my insurance # to the PO and see whats what.

You are sooo lucky to be in the U.S. Here in Canada the PO only insures against loss not breakage. They are also restrictive about what they will insure. If you told them it was and antique they would not insure it. Your first course of action is to take the item, with all of the packageing materials to the PO where they can inspect it. Ther are froms to be filled out by both the buyer and shipper. Depending on How the forms are filled out the Postal Service will pay either party involved but not both. Its too bad it was damaged in shipment . There will be another one along someday, be patient.

Okey dokey then. Took the box with original packaging and all broken and intact parts to the post mistress today. She feels that the piece(s) were not properly packed and thus would definitely have broken. She suggested I email the seller/sender and inform her of this. I did and am waiting for a reply. The Post Mistress did say she would cover the cost of only the broken shade if push came to shove but that the sender really should make good. Oh, and it cost the sender only $15 plus $1.35 in insurance to send it. I paid $25. to ship. Now I have to get my reciept that shows exactly what I paid for the item and shipping costs. I think I'm done for. Sad thing. I've bought from EBAY for years and thisis the first bad time I've had. Maybe it will work out in the end. Thanks so much for all your good advice.
