Ok I'm looking at a mare, she is 2 yrs, looks to be blue roan (which is what I'm looking for) and the breeder says she is a true roan. Her sire however, is a gray turned white and her dam is a black/white pinto, (according to her pedigree). I have not seen pictures of the sire or dam but do know for sure the sire has turned white.

Could she really be a blue roan and how do I know she won't turn white? I can email photo's to any who can help me with her coloring.

I don't want a grayed out mare. :new_shocked:

Thanks for ANY help!!!!

I have a "True" blue Roan Mare here, before I found her (which was difficult) The difference that I saw right away in her verses the other "Blue Roan/Gray" was her PITCH BLACK Mask & Ears YEAR ROUND. I have found that Gray horses tend to not have a mask like that the head is a little darker but that was it.

You can email pictures to me if you want.

Hope this helped some.

One parent has to be a roan for an offspring to be a roan....sounds like neither parent is but the breeder may have mistaken the mare to be a black and was a blue roan. The head should be black on a blue roan and if it is a gray, there will probably be white hairs showing up. Mary

As already mentioned......a Blue Roan must have a Roan parent. If the sire (gray turned white) was a Blue Roan before it "grayed out"...it's possible that she could be a Blue Roan.

A true Blue Roan will have black points....ei: head, mane, tail & lower legs. Check that out, and if you find she doesn't have all those dark points, then she's not a Blue Roan.

She could be, but IME it is unlikely, honestly, it is one of the most often mistaken colours.

A true roan will have a darker head than body. I think with this mare, the way to tell is to see if her head is darker than her neck/body, or if it's the same "blue roan" color. If her head is the same color, my bet is she is a grey. She could be fading to grey and still have darker lower legs (I have a palomino-grey who has darker lower legs), so it's the head color that will be the most telling on this horse.

Thanks all, in the pictures its a bit hard to tell, she definitly has darker legs but the rest of her looks very close to the same color head looks a bit darker but its not really obvious, I've sent pictures to a couple of people and they both agree'd..............gray!

Hi!

I just back to the PC and I agee with the others after seeing the photos. She does have dark points however her face doesnt appear to be that dark especially around her nose area. So ,I say gray.

I am gong to send you a PM too! :bgrin

I've seen her sire in person and know his pedigree and there is no true roan in his pedigree. I've seen the photos too and to me she appears to be a gray also.

Here's a pic of our blue roan filly for comparison! This is WWC Miniatures Black Eyed Susan! Her dam is a blue roan pinto and sire is a grullo!

Just to bring it home a little more, here's a picture of my grey colt, Blue. See how his body is colored like WWmini's foal, but his head is the same color as his body. I do love greys (have three of them). More pics on Blue's webpage that show how he went from black to grey. Just to keep everything nice and confusing, it's very possible to have a blue roan that also is grey (so head would be darker for awhile, eventually to be all "white").

Here are pictures of my Blue Roan mare who is 7 years old. One photo she is heavily in foal with her spring coat taken in 4-06 and the other 2 were taken in her fall coat 10-06.

You may keep these for reference if you would like and I also have more photos of her in her different coat "colors" through out the year....It is amazing that True Roans change that much during the year... :bgrin .

Dona (Kickapoo) has many photos of her beautiful Bay Roan mare showing her different stages too. She sent them to me once.

Thanks for reminding me Jeri.....and BTW, your Blue Roan pinto mare is gorgeous!

Yes....roan's coats can vary dramaticaly with the seasons!

Here is a Bay Roan in Spring coat..her lightest shade.

Here is the same mare in her in-between shade, summer coat..

And here she is in her darkest shade, winter coat....(shown here with her filly who was also a Bay Roan, but much darker)

And then, you get those strange in-between shades when they are transitioning from one season to another....

Here she is in what I call her "Blue Corn" shade....

Here, she appears to have "reverse dappling"...

And here, she looks half & half!

You'll note that in some of these shots, her mane is not black. I always thought it was strange that her mane wasn't black like the rest of her points...but it DID eventually come in black by the time she was around 3 years old. A lot of people told me I should dye it black when I was showing her...but I didn't want to change her "natural" coloring...I liked it the way it was.

There you are Dona! :aktion033:

I knew your pictures and explanations were a lot better than mine are. :bgrin

Thanks for the compliment on my little girl! She had a pretty Bay Roan Tobiano/Overo Colt with a huge Blaze and Blue Eyes this year. He has just turned 2 months old. So, I actually got to see my first foal that was a true roan and it was really interesting to see the color change so quickly. :bgrin

Oh and Donna is right about the mane sometimes being lighter too. My mare does the same thing and in the winter it gets darker again.

Sounds grey to me. I know grey appies often look blue roan and it's very hard to distinguish. In the non appy I think seeing the dark head is definatly the thing to look for. There is ususally a definate mask or black face on the true roans. A lot of people make that mistake
