My husband is getting ready to build the portable stall gates for shows. However, I do not know the measurements or specifics on them. These are gates that are put across the door opening of the show stalls so that the stall door can remain open during the day and the horses can see out. Does anyone have these and can give me some measurements and pointers on making them?

Thank you in advance-

albahurst - Sorry,I'm not of much help here, but I'll be watching this thread. I would think you may want gates that are adjustable since different places you may show at the stalls may vary in size. Let me know if you find any good instructions or links on the topic. Thanks

I have to come up with some gates for the mini's at the county fair so they can see out and others can see in. I'd like to know what other use to make them.

I've thought heavy/thick PVC might work well, be light, and fairly easy to make with the proper stall measurments. I haven't looked into what the $ might be, or figured out how to connect a pvc gate to the existing pole on the stall. I need to make a trip to the hardware store.

I also thought about making them out of hog panels , but with PVC - no ruff edges.

Waiting anxiously for every ones ideas!

Thank you!

I am thinking I am going to make some put of PVC that will be adjustable (slide in and out of it's self). I gotta get moving on things. We are showing in May.

Heavy Duty zip ties!
I love ZIP Ties!! And duck tape!

But Zip ties sound like a good solution! Thanks!

No one has posted anything negative about using PVC so it must be ok to use. Hog panels I'd be afraid one of them would stick a foot thru it pawing, or trying to stand on it to hang their heads over more. Mini's can be so mischievious. Some are as ornery as my goats, as far as standing on things and being stubborn.

We'd love to see some pics of PVC gates if anyone has any. Sorry, for highjacking your post - albahurst

Thanks!

There was a farm in ID that sold both the panels and the plans for PVC panels that expanded I will see if I an find the link

You can find the info at the bottom of the classified-other page I was not sure if it was ok to post the ad here.

Peggy we have 4' wide gates with mesh. I think they are goat gates you can buy at TSC. They are pricey but we use them on our stalls and are heavy duty. We are going to just remove them on our stalls here and use them at the shows. We will just attach with zip ties.

Peggy, did you happen to see the nifty gate I was using at the world show? Jim Barenklau made it out of aluminum, you attach it with zip ties, and it has a gate so you aren't constantly having to undo the entire thing. I think it is 4' tall and 5' wide but I'd have to go measure to be sure. I can take a pic for you tomorrow if we don't get a blizzard. I plan to make my hubby make about 4 more of them for me. They are super nice!

I would love to see photos!! I did not see it at Worlds.

I would love to see photos of your gate as well LOVE the walk thru idea

I use stall screens at home and keep several on the trailer for shows.

They are 38" high and 48 " wide - I can't recall any show where the door opening was too wide for the stall screen.

Mine came from Dover Saddlery 4 years ago. http://www.doversaddlery.com/dovers-stall-...1-27264/cn/186/

The screen is shown UPSIDE DOWN on the Dover web site.

Miller's Harness shows the exact same stall screen as Dover for $20 less and $10 cheaper on shipping.

I haven't purchased anything from Miller's in over 40 years so I can't really recommend them.

We mount the screens with eye screws or Dover sells brackets ( separately) to make installation at shows easier.

Another eye screw is used to connect the stall screen to the door jam with a double end snap.

You can come up with lots of ways to hang them - I never hang mine so that the opening between the bottom of the screen and the ground is more than 10".

If you have a well behaved horse you can attach the screen so that it rests on the floor of your stall just inside the door - a 32" mini can then stick their head out into the aisle.

My Shetlands have their screens set at a height of 48" simply because they tend to get excited if kept inside due to bad weather - if they rear I would not want their screen resting on the ground.

Another place I know to purchase good quality screens is Valley Vet - the rungs on their screens each have a bolt that screws on the rung to prevent the horse from lifting the screen out of the eye screws.

I use Valley Vet screens at home & Dover's screens at shows. http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pg...e9-db9271ae624f

Freight costs for one screen usually run $55 - 75.

Best thing to do is get a group of people to go in with you and split the freight cost.

If you order at least 6 screens from Valley Vet at one time they come "packaged" in a super heavy duty metal pallet that you get to keep.

This pallet is fantastic for dragging arenas or driveways and it will never wear out.

I can not personally recommend any other companies for stall screens .

If anybody has any other questions please send me a PM.

Jim showed me those gates and I ordered two of them. I probably won't get them until Worlds this year. I may have to email him to see if I can get them sooner so I can use them this year.

I'll just go do that now.

OK, never posted a pic, but I'm going to try.... the dimensions are 39" tall by 59" wide.

I love the gate within the gate did you say you bought those or had them made?

Jim Barenklau made it for me, but I think my hubby is going to try and make some more. It is really solid when you set it up, so you can actually leave them with just that overnight at the shows, helps keep the air cleaner in the stall and the main reason I had it made was because my little stud went crazy being able to hear stuff happening but not being able to SEE. Mr. Social absolutely loved his new gate!
