Hey Guys
default_smile.png

Im pre-planning what to buy for my Gray and white pinto show colt.

1) This year as a weanling he sunbleached a little bit on his gray mostly on his face which I can't cover how can I prevent it?

2) What sheet would you recommend if any when its is extremely hot / just normal heat in the summer to prevent sunburn and sunbleaching on him?

3) What are your tips for white horses my new mares pretty much all white

Usually I don't have a problem with grays sunbleaching? But what we do with our white/gray horses during show season, during the day we keep them locked up in their stall and give them run in a dry lot at night. We have quite a few trees around our place so it is safe to turn them out around 5 or 6 in the evening when the sun has started the descent down, and they are out in the dry lot until the next morning around 5 or 6am. We have a lik it in their stall to keep from boredom and a plastic jug with some small rocks for noise, there are always other horses in the barn with them either able to come and go out of the barn or in the next stall for company. We do not keep our show horses seperated from each other, have never really had any problems with them marking each other up.

Just stall them during the hot parts of the day and let them out in the mornings and nights. That's the best way.

We had a paint horse with a baldy face. For sensitive areas such as their noses, we put baby sunscreen on it. They get really dirty, but it protects them. His face would peel and scab if we didn't. So you'll just have to do a good washing before a show.

But mainly, their hair should protect them. If you are shaving them, I would definately stall them. But my friend has a white broodmare that has nothing done with her becuse he hair keeps her protected.

If you blanket them, they'll just rip it to shreds and you'll be out a blanket.

Yea I mean he will be clipped all summer we have like 15 shows :DOH!

I guesse I could put him out at night I did that with my gelding this year . It always makes me a tiny bit nervous but my gelding was perfectly fine they could go out together , the colt would probably harrass my gelding

You are now talking to white horse central

. The secret is to show sheen them down really good at night before the show after you bathe them. Those white chalk blocks are great!

Also, make sure you have miracle groom on hand at the show for quick touch ups and take off the dirt spots.

Heh heh heh heh

hey dev.

i used white'n'bright shampoo on stormy's mane and tail and it worked great also used it on a bay pinto's white socks i showed that were stained redish orange from dirt and grime and it worked great for her too.

My thoroughbred Suman is a gray but white since he is almost 14.

His nose sunburns, so we put suncreen or desitin on his nose(his only problem area)

I think Zorro is silver and white (and adorable)

Some people will read this and will think grey and white (meaning arab grey / true grey / white-grey) and not realize you're talking about silver dapple (I don't think he's greying?).

For my horses before a show, I bathe them the day before and douse them in Show Sheen or Laser Sheen and then dress them in slinkies, hoods, sheets and tail bags. But the hair polish helps keep their legs clean and repells the dirt.

Good luck,

Jill
