I looked out at the pasture and saw no trace of the horse kids. Hmmmm...thats funny , then looked at the sky , oh , a summer storm is comming in and they are under the veranda and, or in the stall. Should I be locking them in for the night when we have thunder and lightning? they seem to stay in on their own even with the door open ( senseable) but who knows what they do when I am sound asleep . Is there danger outside ? Could they be hit by lightning? should I lock them in , its so warm tonight I hate to lock them in , what do you guys do?

That really is a personal decision.

There's always a risk of being hit by lightning, but there's also the risk that the barn could be too.

We keep our moms and babies at the barn and give them the option to come inside.

Lightening kills horses. Its a horrible thing to see a horse who has been blown apart by a lightning strike.

Horses don't have that kind of brain to know when to seek shelter so that's why you make those decisions for them. Mine are never left out in any kind of bad weather.
