Quoting Happy Valley: "The peas are for luck, but the cabbage or mustard greens (something green and leafy, but not lettuce) is for money. We make sure to try to eat plenty of that!

Also, don't wash clothes on New Years Day. My Grandmother (Mamaw Pannell) believed that if you wash on New Year's Day that you will be washing for the dead before the year is out!

She also believed that if you point at a melon on the vine it will rot. Got my hand slapped for that a time or two when I was pointing one out that I liked."

I think this is very interesting. My mom and grandma raised us with many of the same types of ideas, like if it's bad luck to see an owl in daylight someone close to you is about to die, never open an umbrella in the house, if you spill salt you must throw a pinch over your left shoulder, only pick up a penny if it's heads up, changing an animal's or a boat's name brings bad luck, never cut your hair on Friday, cupboards must be cleaned before Easter, bury a statue or likeness of St. Joseph in your yard, facing the street if you want to sell your house fast. I was raised with dozens of superstitions and omens. To this day I've never again walked under a ladder because my grandma grabbed me by the collar when I was about to do it as a kid and told me it's an insult to the Trinity.

Whether one believes in them or not is irrelevant but it's interesting to hear about the superstitions we've grown up with.

Oh my yes I have a lot of them ! My great gramd ma was an old world witch. fromScotland Don't wash on new years day, don't do anything widdershins [nonclockwise] because that was undoing something. Bless everything , clothes, food, house, people, cars pets everything. Too many to even try to tell, I could type the rest of the day.

DO NOT WALK UNDER A LADDER ever....this one isn't superstion

my sister didn't listen and went under the ladder and ended up blue when we were little, an entire can of paint fell on her to prove it is bad luck to walk under a ladder..........

Break a mirror 7 years bad luck......

Stepping on cracks...isn't just a child game...I have been known to almost fall on my face to avoid doing so.............

salt, and other spices......candles .....lots of rules

do not cross a fairy ring......and do not do any damage to it either........

owls are fine so are black cats...........

personally doing laundry ever is a bad omen
wink.gif
means I am actually cleaning and I try to avoid that at all costs

cats whiskers belong on cats do not pull them out...ok I kinda don't even like finding a loose one that came out naturally.......

lots and lots....and they aren't superstions they are just part of everyday life.......

I'm an ER nurse.......we never use the word "Quiet". If any of our patients say "Gee, you guys are quiet tonight" they immediately get a response of "Don't say the "Q" word!"

Not sure if this counts as superstition.....since it IS true!

"What goes around - comes around." The Karma idea. I try to live by it.

Same here. Thats the only thing supersititon like I believe. But that does not mean something bad will happen to you if you do something bad to some one. I feel that it like a big balance. for example lets say, a few weeks back i was on my walk home from school, I left late as always, i wait with my friends for their bus. When i walk home, there is no one else on the side walk. i was almost home when i heard a little boy calling for help, it turned out he was stuck in a small tree. I lifted him out, told him to have a good day and not get stuck in any more trees and went on my way. Now what i believe is that since i did a nice thing, does not mean something good will happen to me, maybe the little boy will do something nice for someone else, possibly help one of his classmates the next day, or share his lunch with a kid who forgot theirs that day. I believe is like a big cycle and everything is always balenced. Sometimes this happens very quickly in your own home like one night me my parents and my brother were all playing cards. Mom went to stand up and hit her knee on the table Me and dad laughed at her :p and my brother was up stairs getting a drink, the glass fell on his foot.

I dont walk under ladders and i cracked a mirror when i was 11 .....i was scared for life!

Well, here's mine (not to put any of you in a panic or anything

).

The Christmas tree and decorations must be put away by the New Year, or the problems of the old year will cross into the new. Guess what I'm doing today?

Darrin and I both have Native American heritage. They believe that owls are an omen of death. One night 6 years ago on Dec. 23, I had a colicking pony, Onslow. It was the middle of the night. We were getting ready to take him to the vet and I went in the house to get my purse and a cup of coffee. When I came out I heard the distinctive "Hooooo, hoohoo, hooooo." There was a beautiful Great Horned Owl sitting on the telephone pole looking towards the barn. I shoo'd him away; I was afraid why he was there. Onslow passed away from a tumor in his belly that night. I hadn't seen a Great Horned on our place before, nor have I seen one since. On the rare occasions that I've heard them in the distance, I always say a little prayer to keep my loved ones safe and well. We do have resident Barn Owls, but they don't seem to have the same presence and spirit about them as the Great Horned.

I too am another big believer in this. In some instances have even seen it come into play. It is also the main reason I am not a liar, if the thought should enter my head, I know something will come back to bite me in the but*.

I have a necklace that my husband made for me (he's a jeweler), that I "feel" in my heart is my good luck talisman. It is of a standing singapore horse on a coin that my mother bought for me. It has some rubies and diamonds around it in the holder that my dad (who is now deceased) gave for the necklace. They were awards to him from his job, he would get a ruby for every 5 years of service, and a diamond for every 10. As I mentioned my husband made it, so I can not do any traveling without it or if I am very nervous you will see me pulling on my necklace. It gives me comfort if nothing else. If your ever at a horse show, yep, you will see the necklace.

My grandmother one time had a black cat run across the road in front of her while driving, she had to hurry up and roll the window down, count to 10 real fast and spit out the window.

She was also a big believer in alot of those mentioned above.
