Quoting Happy Valley: "The peas are for luck, but the cabbage or mustard greens (something green and leafy, but not lettuce) is for money. We make sure to try to eat plenty of that!
Also, don't wash clothes on New Years Day. My Grandmother (Mamaw Pannell) believed that if you wash on New Year's Day that you will be washing for the dead before the year is out!
She also believed that if you point at a melon on the vine it will rot. Got my hand slapped for that a time or two when I was pointing one out that I liked."
I think this is very interesting. My mom and grandma raised us with many of the same types of ideas, like if it's bad luck to see an owl in daylight someone close to you is about to die, never open an umbrella in the house, if you spill salt you must throw a pinch over your left shoulder, only pick up a penny if it's heads up, changing an animal's or a boat's name brings bad luck, never cut your hair on Friday, cupboards must be cleaned before Easter, bury a statue or likeness of St. Joseph in your yard, facing the street if you want to sell your house fast. I was raised with dozens of superstitions and omens. To this day I've never again walked under a ladder because my grandma grabbed me by the collar when I was about to do it as a kid and told me it's an insult to the Trinity.
Whether one believes in them or not is irrelevant but it's interesting to hear about the superstitions we've grown up with.
