Just got to wondering how many people on this forum actually have diabetes. Seems to me there are an awful lot of us.

Me first: I have type 2 diabetes. Found out at age 57. (May 5, 1999) (8 years in May) Oral medication. Should exercise more but you know how that goes. All in all I'm doing okay but could be doing better.

I'm not!

But I was severely hypoglycemic as a teenager which is a pre-cursor to diabetes, especially when it runs in families like it does in mine.

I don't plan on becoming diabetic.........I watch my blood sugar levels regularly, and I eat NO refined sugars of any kind at all

I also do things to help........I take Chromium and I eat cinnamon on a daily basis.

I have Type 2. I just found out January 23. I am 38 and on oral meds, watching my carbs (not "low" carb, just limiting carbs) and walking almost every day. I feel a lot better already. After finding out and starting the meds, it made me realize how honestly flat out TIRED I have been for years. Things are much better now

I dont, but my dad does. i dont remember which type is which, but he found out at age 14. he has to test his blood 10 times a day, and has insulin shots. also has to watch what he eats, and runs every morning.

I have type 2 diabetics. Found out in Dec. 2000. Doing pretty good, take my meds religiously. I don't exercise alot either. I love choc. but do my best to follow the rules most of the time.

Love Casper your dad is type one.

I was type one until 2005 when I had a dual transplant. i had been diabetic since 17 months old so I had been for about 28 years. I know there will come a day that it will happen again as the transplanted pancreas doesn't last forever but every day without is a blessing.

I was diagnosed 18 mos ago type B. I'm a 5 shot a day diabetic, 3 fast acting and 2 slow acting. Thanks to Splenda you can still have treats. Just put sugar free candy in search. A new one I just found and got an order from is www.perfectlysweet.com. Check it out.

I am not YET, but the doctor said I will be, sooner or later. I can help delay it by changing my eating habits, lose some weight and get some exercise. Right now, I am Hyploglaucemic as well as I have Hyperinsulinemia. I have always been a junk food junkie...the purer in sugar, the better I like it, so this has been hard for me to deal with. Maling a little progress, but not trying hard enough, and I really should smarten up!

I'm a type I, insulin-dependent diabetic. While this form is often referred to as "Juvenile" diabetes, I was diagnosed when I was 26, as were 2 uncles -- one on each side of the family.

I've been very lucky in that mine is fairly easily controlled, but various side effects are kicking in -- poor eyesight, neuropathy in my feet, and last spring some unknown infection put me in the hospital with cellulitis.

Amanda, you are so fortunate to have had your transplant...I hope the pancreas you now have lasts for a long, long time!

Type 2 here, I found out Jan of 2000 and just started pills Dec of 2006. I have also started exercising more and trying to loose some weight. (But it keeps finding me.) :new_shocked: I do NOT want to take shots! The finger sticks are bad enough.

It's in my family on both sides, so I guess it was inevitable.

Type 1, celebrating 17 years...of insulin and testing...

Been healthy, have two healthy kids...no major problems other than neuropathy in hands, legs and feet, on the pump for 11 years now and love it.

Have a thing for chocolate and everything I am not supposed to eat and drink. Having a hard time with that but going to see a diatician next week. Summers coming and I would give anything to have my favorite Frozen Strawberry daquarie!

I take oral meds as well.

I asked my doctor (seeing him every 4wks now) if I could drink alcohol. I'd meant to ask him in January and forgot and then forgot at our last appt so had to call his office. The first time I'd forgotten to ask, I was scared I'd sound like a lush if I called to ask. This time I called and then, I swear, I must have called my voicemail to see if he'd called with the answer more than a dozen times before I got the answer -- YES, but just one at a time even though I have two hands :bgrin I'm sure it's different for everyone and also the meds you are on would be a factor, too, but man I was glad of the news. I have been drinking a glass or two of red wine about 5 times a week now YAY!

Type 2 just diagnosed yesterday 3-30-07. Oral meds and testing I'm still reeling from the news.

Going to take the classes starting next week. I'm almost afraid to eat anything now for the fear of screwing up!!!

Type 2 for many years, oral meds. My last A1c was 6.1 so am doing well. I am starting to see a foot doctor now, should have started earlier! He carved off some calluses, and then took impressions for custom orthotics for my shoes.

Watch your feet folks, a friend at work is in bad shape, just lost 1/2 of one foot last month.

I eat pretty much what I want, but in moderation, and oh yeah a drink a day, maybe 2. As long as the A1c keeps ok, I will truck on.

My father and maternal grandmother were both type2.

Gini I am so sorry to hear this. I wish you well.

You will be okay after you get to talk to someone. Just hang in there, another week before classes will not hurt you. Just remember this did not just pop up out of nowhere. It took many months to appear. So another week will be okay. Just relax and try not to worry until then. Okay?

My son has it, diagnosed at 14. Docs think he may possibly have a type 3 which is a combination of both types 1 & 2. Takes insulin and oral meds. Doing great but could test more often...........

Thanks all. At least we know we are not alone. Both my Grandmothers, my Mom, my older sister and my brother and I all have (or had it) so it runs very heavy in our family, both sides. My sister was blind and lost both legs before she passed away at age 55. She DID NOT take care of herself.
default_wacko.png
: . Mom lived with it for 20+ years and passed away at age 68.

I don't drink , although doctor said I could now and then. The meds I'm on Metformin has a warning about lactic acidosis that scares me. Sometimes fatal.

In fact just the other day, I asked my son for a small amount of beer in a glass.
default_rolleyes.gif
: I drank it (I'm a gulper, not a sipper) :bgrin 10 minutes later I wished I hadn't. Made me feel awful. I always say 1 can of beer makes me feel like it used to when I drank a 12-pack :new_shocked: . And I could do it, party girl. If I never have another beer, I had my share. I wasn't a lush, just really liked beer.

Wish you all well, especially you new ones. It will be okay if you watch what you eat. Not as bad as it sounds.

Take care.

Bonnie

I'm also on the Metformin and after reading about the reactions, I think that's what scared me the most. Thank you for your encouragement.
