The largest horse in Chatham-Kent and possibly the world!
That’s how Shereen Thompson of Tupperville describes “Poe,’’ her 10-year-old Clydesdale.
Thompson is attempting to have the animal entered as a contender for the world record in the Guinness Book of World Records.
“I had no idea it was such a lengthy process,’’ she said yesterday. “I also didn’t realize the organization is headquartered in the United Kingdom.’’
She has entered Poe’s information online at the Guinness Book of World Records website.
“Now I’m waiting to hear back from someone connected with the organization,’’ she said.
Thompson, who acquired the horse two years ago, said Poe stands 20.2 hands tall — the current record is 19.3 hands.
Thompson rode Poe, a horse she rescued, in last year’s Dresden Exhibition parade.
When Thompson managed to rescue the animal, it weighed less than 1,500 pounds. Today it tips the scales at more than 3,000 pounds.
One of its favourite treats are cabbage rolls from The Track restaurant adjacent to Dresden Raceway.
"Poe just loves them,'' said Thompson.
She said that despite Poe's size, he's as gentle as a kitten.
Poe is just one several animals on Thompson's farm, including a pot-bellied pig, which she also rescued.
Thompson plans to ride Poe in this year's Dresden Exhibition parade and hopes to put him on display at the fair so people can marvel at his size.
She said she has long been a Clydesdale fan and when she came across Poe she wasted little time in acquiring the animal.
Thompson said she often has to replace overhead light bulbs in the barn because Poe hits his head on them and breaks them.
