How long is a tetnus vaccination good for? Somehow I thought it was good for 10 years, like for people. Anyone ever have a horse contract tetnus?

Lately, I know of a large horse that had it. The owner happened to be in the lot feeding, and the horse just fell on the ground. They were finally able to get him up and took him to an equine center where he was diagnosed with tetnus. They saved him; the vet said it was because he was seen in the early stages, and perhaps had residual vaccination protection.

Horses need vaccines more often for tetanus because they are much more exposed to it than people.

With our horses, they usually get 2 tetnus shots a year because of the spring vaccinations and the fall teeth floatings we do. Just a precautionary measure!
