We should all try to get along and respect opinions of all size horses.
This comment by Mary Lou in her post about whether there should be separate forums for Under and Over Miniatures is what prompted me to write.

I work for a newspaper, a radio station and a TV station. I critique people for a living. I understand the power of words.

I'm not so sure everyone realizes what they write can be the launch pad for strong emotional reactions.

It's too easy to dash off a comment and hit that send button. And not take into account how your words will be received.

Just about every day, I get e-mails from people who don't agree with something I wrote in the newspaper or said over radio or TV. Some of these e-mails are coarse and vile. I usually write back and ask if they meant to come off that way. Often, I get an e-mail back saying that they didn't realize how coarse and vile they had been until they went back and read what they originally sent.

When I'm criticizing someone in print or over the air, I have a rule: If I wouldn't say it to someone's face, I won't put it in the paper or say it on the radio or TV.

Ask yourself the next time you've just written something critical about someone or their views and are about to hit that send button: Would you say it to their face?

Good point... but i think everything I have written I would say to someones face.

I agree with you that we should all think about how our words will come across, but I really don't think anyone here has come across as coarse or vile. I've seen sites that are much much worse. People may get heated over a particular discussion, but I haven't seen a whole lot of mud slinging going on. Or....maybe I'm just not "getting" it as I don't know the back stories. :DOH!

I never said anyone here on the Forum has been coarse or vile. I was talking about e-mails I've received related to my job. I do believe I have read posts here, though, that are discourteous.

I ALWAYS proofread, first for spelling (my fingers go faster than my mind or eyes), and while I reread many times I find a better way to explain my thoughts.

No matter how many times I re write I seem to be a professional at......

Excellent point about the power of words and how you deal with someone who may say something in an unkind manner. In stead of reacting badly to something it is more productive to act in a good manner. I really am trying to learn as I go! Mary

Bob you are so right! I try not to reply immediately to an e-mail and think things over. Sometimes views change when you think about them and if you jump the gun and reply immediately you may be inserting foot in mouth.

Great post. There is a way to disagree without getting personal. That is my main objection to some posts.

Mary and I disagree about a lot of things but on the other hand we do sometimes agree LOL. I feel no animosity tword her and I hope she doesnt me. Just a difference of opinion.

I do think there are some posters who just post and post and post. Bascially they say the same thing over and over but post again anyway. Sometimes you have to learn to just walk away from the computer and stop posting.

This summer with my husband sick etc I just dont let any of it get to me anymore. Having a loved one sick puts things in perspective really fast.

I am also lucky in that I have met so many forum members face to face and they know who I am and what Im about. Its just too easy to hide on a computer and present yourself as something you are not.

Ahh Kay, [guess you are reffering to this Mary]no animosity here towards you. One thing about us gals, if we keep an open mind, we can always change them when we see a need to. I know I sometimes will go with an opposing view just to see if more discussion can bring something out of it....I do like to look at both sides and then maybe draw a conclusion. I also understand that people have different experiences which can give them different perspectives on a matter. Then there are the days I may not put into words exactly what I am thinking..know I am far from perfect but always ready to learn something worthwhile. Hugs, Mary

I agree, but when you have people who will get bent out of shape if you say you usually prefer _______ (kind / type / size... whatever) a horse then what's to be done other than :DOH! I can't remember when I let someone else's preference for their own herd upset me the way mine has the ability to upset others
