Although I have never corrected anyone's spelling on the forum, I often chuckle to myself about spelling errors and the misuse of some words, ie. their, there, they're and to, too, two, to name just a few. Typing errors are just that but using a word in the wrong text shows that the person does not know the meaning of the word, and unfortunately spellcheck will NOT correct the word. As soon as I have read the post I go on and completely forget about it. I do not make a mental list of the bad spellers for future reference.

People that use the phrase "I am a bad speller" and expect people to understand and accept that to me is just plain laziness on their part. There are many tools available to help with spelling and if you decide not to use them, don't expect people to understand.

If I were to receive a written letter, or an e-mail from a business or friend, I would be VERY insulted if there were spelling errors on it. I would feel that the person did not feel that I was worth the trouble of spelling correctly and most likely I would throw the letter out and ignore it.

I was recently involved in putting on some AMHR shows with a few people, and one person, who was a terrible speller, took it upon himself to send out several e-mails requesting money with spelling errors on it. I was livid that he did that as I was associated with these shows and I did not like the total lack of professionalism that he displayed, and quite a few of the people that received the e-mail commented on the spelling. He used the excuse "I am a bad speller" and I responded, use Spellcheck, or have your wife or I check over your work, being a "bad speller" is not an excuse for your lack of professionalism. People may not say anything, but trust me, a mental note is made.

Just a suggestion, if you use the Google toolbar, there is a spell checker built into it.

As long as I can make out what you're trying to say I DON'T CARE how you spell it.

I could spell until I took speedwriting in college. You're suppose to spell things like they sound and leave letters out BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!

Does MSN have spell checker?

I do admit to getting any at people for their spelling. However, I don't get too offended when they mispell a word when writing. Its the internet chatspeak that drives me up the wall.

When I am Instant Messaging with my friends, I do you the occasional "u" instead of "you". However, when I am on the forum, this is a respectable place and I think you should try your best to correctly use the English language. I wonder just how many typo's I have on this alone. I think that people for the most part do understand what we try to say. Changing a "from" to a "form" most people won't really notice something like that.

All in all, I think its the chatspeak that has been driving people insane. That and when people spell something they should know totally wrong.

Writing was developed as a means of communication- a translation of the spoken If it is not recognisable as English, and not comprehensible, surely we have the right to ask if someone could try a little harder??Shane, what programme are you running- Windows???

On my page the spellcheck is at the top of the page- a tick with ABC above it.

Ok now we all know I am not one to talk about spelling- although I can spell I just cant type and sometimes it is the typo issues that I hit over and over again and say forget it. Also at the moment I am missing a nail on a finger so have this big ol band aid which makes it hard.

My biggest thing is puntcuation i know that.. i never did get it in school have a problem with it but.. I do find it funny and ironic (sorry to use you were rabbit

) that in a thread where others are talking about spelling there is spelling errors of there own

For me personally it is what you say (ok type) and then intention behind it more then how it is written but that is just me

Hi Lisa just wanted to say in defense of Fizz's spelling that the Brits, Aussies and Canadians spell many words just a bit differently than we here in the states. Being close to the Canadian border, I am accustomed to seeing things spelled like programme instead of program and recognise instead of recognize and tend to use both types of spelling in my writings depending on my audience.

I'm as guilty of misspellings as anyone, but this isn't English 101. It's a place to share ideas and experiences. I really don't ever have problems understanding what a person's trying to say here, except sometimes with the young kids' computer slang stuff.

was just using it as an example- differences, different countries, different ways to spell things.. really in the grand scheme of things.. totally unimportant in this type of place to me anyway

Most of what I was about to say has been said already...there is an enormous difference between those who can't spell (and those with errant fingers) and those who simply don't care...also there's quite a difference between a typo in a forum post versus those in business communications or that which is set for posterity.

Most important, while I most definitely care about grammar and spelling, I would never judge or put down any individual for whom spelling is a challenge.

Ashley, the very fact that you bring this up (along with other posts of yours on the subject) tells me that you care very much, and I have great respect for this. Your intelligence is obvious in what you have to say and in your recognition of the difficulties you find in spelling.

For those who just don't care, grammar and spelling are cases of use it or lose it...and online communications have contributed greatly to losing it. I use every opportunity possible to practice and maintain spelling and proper grammar -- that's just my thing. I am a writer and have worked as a copy editor, correcting other people's writing, so it is physically and psychologically impossible for me to not notice spelling and grammatical errors

Everyone makes typos (my keyboard sucks, so I make many), but you'll also notice that many of my posts are later edited -- I'll always go back and correct any bloopers I see.

In the end, if you don't care, so be it, but don't flame me for caring. THAT is just a bit too much like high school, where the jocks and cheerleaders put down those who cared about -- gasp! -- learning...who were WE not to accept that school was about football?
