My dear Missy (God rest her soul)

: was the BEST mother! She was the sweetest mare...milked like a Holstein & always lifted her leg to make it easier for the babies to nurse.

Her daughter, Deja Vu does the same thing! I am so glad I have her! Now that Missy is gone, she is the only daughter I have of her & CockRobin.

And here is a good photo of the white marking on her 2006 colt's "Kickapoo Moon's Phantom Feather" ear. I thought it looked like a feather in his cap...hence "feather" in his name.

That is so sweet! I LOVE seeing the good moms doing that. I totally believe that a good broodmare begets a good broodmare.

And I can sure see why you named your wonderful boy "Feather". He is going to be fun to watch growing up.

MA

It is so hard to believe that Deja is a mama. My gosh Dona, where did the years go? They are both so pretty.

Yes I have a wonderful mommy in Holly, Timmy's mom. She was wonderful and misses having a baby so she and Nick have re-newed their vows in hopes for a little "Noelle" next year.

On the flip side, Knight Star's mother seems to be possessed............

I love your pictures, Dona!

My mare, Lou, did that with lifting her leg for Skipper when he was just born so he could find where to nurse easier. I had not ever seen a mare do that before. Then later when she wanted to walk around the stall, she did this very SLOW motion exagerated high stepping almost like a robot. Just SO slow and way, way higher steps than she ever takes. She did not want to take any chance of stepping on him. Watching her that first night when Skipper was born, I felt like I loved her so much my heart could burst. Just thinking back to how she was to Skipper is making me tear up.

I have one like that too...but I was not thinking of that when I took this picture today.

I love "loving" mothers, and glad to say most of them seem to be.

A good dam is worth her weight in gold.

We have the leg hikers and the one's that don't mind having other babies stop for a snack too.

This year one of our maidens (she's like her mom) has taken to the whole motherhood thing in a big way. She's been wanting to help out with every other new mare's foals - she's first there to see the new baby, with her foal in tow. We had one born in the same pasture with her, and she was busily cleaning the baby for the new mom - who was still down passing the placenta!

Great photos Dona - Feather is a cutie!

It is so neat to watch good mom's with their foals. I've been lucky with mine. Love the pictures! Feather is quite the cutie.

Yes, I have 2 both maidens, both soooooo sweet best Momma's but I am not sure they will have any more foals. Fairy is so kind to her foal:)

Both have tons of milk and I have never seen them get at all irritated with their foals, even when Theo rears up and rests hanging over his Momma, she just keeps eating her hay:)

I wouldn't trade my girls for gold:)

BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL HORSES!!!!

I have a few mares that are like that -- even one who allowed a newborn colt to nurse while she was still lying down, recovering from foaling! they are worth their weight in better than gold.

I rarely get a good photo, but this one shows the bond between mom and son:

I just love mares like that- makes it so easy!

This is Amore Misty Eve with my daughter. Not only is Misty a good mom but she's so gentle any of the kids can fool with her.

Her babies get her same temperment- here is Cody (aka C Spots Lakota Mist).

Love that marking on your foals ear!
