Found this little guy shivering in a tree in Sable's pen the other day. I thought he was dead at first..so I tossed a bit of snow at him and sure enough he was alive. Poor guy is probably a baby from this spring as he was tiny compared to others I have seen here. He was up there in -15 C weather so I was worried, but he apparently scrambled down the tree and took off right past Sable to the woods. Glad I grabbed my camera! The pics are a bit fuzzy because he was so high up in the tree.

Raccoons

Raccoons are very strong and can be very unfriendly, and very dangerous when cornered. Like other urban wildlife, raccoons are also capable of transmitting serious illnesses. They are susceptible to rabies, mange, and many other parasitic and arboviral diseases.

Being very strong, raccoons are also easily capable of damaging homes and property. They may even attack people and pets when they are accidentally cornered. Children are particularly at risk because they may think raccoons are "cute" and try to pet them. This can be especially dangerous because rabid or otherwise seriously ill raccoons sometimes appear tame or docile, and children may attempt to pet them or bring them home.

When raccoons get into buildings and nest in secluded places like attics, chimneys, soffits, crawl spaces, and other voids, they can do major damage to the building (especially its wooden parts). In addition, they create a health hazard through their urine, droppings, shed fur, and parasites.

I personaly love racoons and feel they have a right to be around just like all the animals. But I do prefer them to stay in the woods, not my yard!

I hope he finds a nice warm place away from your barn and horses!

They are cute, I had one as a pet for many years and they can be very dangerous animals...even when raised as a pet....but cute all the same! My raccoon's name was "scruffy" and he weighed close to 50lbs.

I would be a little concerned seeing your visitor out in the day...they normally are NOT out in the day, he could be sick...distemper is the first thing I'm thinking, especially when you say he was shaking, I highly doubt he was cold, could of been frightened, but I don't think cold.

Thanks for sharing the pics.

He would not have made it to the woods, same for opposium and skunks.

Oh trust me I am well aware of the dangers of racoons. He was not in the barn, I actually think Sable may have driven him up there. He did go off in the woods though, my kids saw him go. I just snapped the pics and then left him alone. He looked absolutely petrified. My kids also know not to go near the wildlife.

Sonya, I was thinking the same thing, the only time I usually see them is at night, if I see them at all. Well he is long gone now, so no worries!
