I got a coupon for a free bag of feed from Triple Crown. Wasn't that nice? I was merely looking about because my Purina Mill closed. Now tell me folks....3 of the feeds are lookin good. I am very concerned about the sugar and starch after losing Treasure and what with Thera's ulcer. So..Complete? Senior? Lite? They get just abit am & pm..chubby bunnies. Grass hay all day free fed. My only concern was when Halley was a weanling we discovered she had a sensitivity to the alfalfa that was in the Equine Jr. Open to all comments and thank you. BTW I am a huge believer in the KISS method. These kids are just pasture ornaments for now. Thanks :saludando:

HI Debs,

I'm feeding the Triple Crown Low Starch, I love it. The only reason I started feeding it a couple of months ago was to save on some of the hay I'm feeding. Only 3 of mine really need grain, like I've told you. But I'm running low on hay and wanted to stretch it some with something easier than beet pulp.

The low starch has no alfalfa if my memory serves me right, it's beet pulp based. It's nice soft small pellets, smells like yummy toast and my guys all love it, I'm only feeding 3/4 cup once a day to those that don't need grain and it's already stretching my hay supply. Liz (hosscrazy) feeds it too, I got her opinion on it before I started it.

Here's a link to the low starch info........ Triple Crown Low Starch

And the ingredients........... Low Starch Ingredients

Hi

I've been feeding T C Lite for a few years to my non working

minis. . I really like it.

It is low fat, starch, low energy & high fibre. It is also heavily fortified.

If you only feed 1 cup 2 times a day, (2 cups a day) your horse

will get all the daily requirements it needs.

Mine all like it too. :bgrin The only thing I don't like...

The price is up to 13 bucks!! I guess all feed prices are up.

I like the T C Growth for my pregnant mares and my babies.

I do feed beet pulp at every meal to.

Good Luck. I hope I was some help

I had a little trouble when feeding the Triple Crown Complete. It is just too high in fat for the minis. My pasture ornaments get the Triple Crown 30%, but it's very pricey at $32 a bag!! :new_shocked:

My show horses are still on Platform Pleasure and Performance and looking great! (Not the Platfrom mini feed...)

So if I were you, I would go for the Triple Crown Lite. I think around here it's $15 a bag, which is still pricey... I don't know!!! Maybe you should PM Rob about his KISS method. He said it only costs him around .60 cents a day to feed each horse. At this moment, that is sounding pretty good to me!!!

I'm feeding my stallions & open mares TC Lite, pregnant & nursing mares get the TC 30% supplement 3/4 cup twice a day.

I think the TC Lite may have alfalfa meal in it. You'll have to check the website, they list the ingredients there.

Hey Debs! I was thinking... if your mares are just pasture ornaments, then they don't NEED the stuff that's in the grain. Why not try a loose mineral that they can help themselves to anytime they want. No grain, just hay, grass and the mineral. And of course the salt block. I would think it would save you money! And they won't get FAT... Just a thought!

I have to agree with Mindy, Debs- I would not be giving them any feed at all.

During the Summer- and believe it or not Spring is springing!- my mares only get grass- even the brood mares only get a token gesture to bring them up- no-one gets feed per se.

The only ones that I feed are the show horses.

I am just now tailing off the broodmares feed as the grass is through here- Spring has come, daffodils- have I made you jealous yet???

Get a bag of Beet Pulp and give them a handful of that as a little treat when they come in and leave it at that.

I don't know, some of you are most likely right, they don't "need" it but are used to getting "something". I only split an 8 oz measure now, it isn't much but they like it. I do have some sunshine plus I could use instead of when it all runs out. No spring here yet but for some lovely temps in the 50s. Still tons of snow and ice. I thank you all for your input.

i have been very pleased with the Triple Crown products I use. I am in a super hay crunch, so have been using TC Complete. It has put weight on my hard keeper without the beet pulp and alfalfa pellets I usually give to him only. At the same time, my porkers (Rainy and Spotter) look very good going into spring, esp. since I haven't worked them at all. Spotter usually looks pregnant in the spring and fall and all the neighbors aske when he is "due". I am really pleased witht them all right now. That said, I have 5 horses and have been going through two bags of feed a week right now to stretch my hay. Once I have real grass again I will probably gradually switch feeds...back to Purina Born to Win is what I am thinking. You use such a minimal amount of that, and I was very happy with my horses when they were on it. With my shortage of hay and grass that just won't work for right now though.

If your mares really don't "need" anything, I think I would go for the 30% supplement. It has the balanced vitamins and minerals and you only use a tiny bit of it. From what I can tell, the TC 30%, Progressive Ration Balancers and the Purings Born To Win are all very close to the same thing.

I've fed the TC Lite and noticed my dry lotted 250# A mare hollowed out she was on grass hay. I think if you fed a higher protein hay you would be ok or if they are on pasture. I'm switching to the TC 30.

FairytailGlennMinis ----- The problem with the Born to win is they are listing their ingredients as Grain by products and other miscellanous stuff, I just switched mine to the Triple Crown 30% instead of the born to win.

Triple crown products are a bit more expensive because most if not all of them are a fixed formula, meaning they don't change from bag to bag, whats sold on the west coast is exactly the same as whats on the east coast, Purina doesn't do this, manna pro doesn't do this, most feed companies use a least cost formulation and you get what ever is cheapest that month and can and usually does vary from one side of the country to the other.

One more thing Debs... some of the horses don't like the taste of the 30% supplement I have to mix a little of a feed that they do like, just top dress it a little. It may not save you any money to go that route...
